Your Odds Of Becoming A Billionaire Just Increased

Break out the Cristal and light up that Cuban cigar (provided you're not from the US, of course) because it's never been easier to become a billionaire. Forbes has released its annual ranking of the world's wealthiest individuals and it's good news for all of us (especially those of us on the internet).
When the dust cleared and all of the dollars, yen, euros, and giant stone coins of the Yap Islanders had been accounted for, it came as no surprise that Microsoft's Bill Gates was atop the heap. For the past twelve years, the one-time geek (now most admired/most despised geek) has been in that position and his estimated net worth of $50 billion keeps him there. Drinks are on him (and if we assume it's $5 per drink and Bill tips 25% that's better than 8 billion, so I hope there's a designated driver).
All in all, nearly 800 of us are billionaires, up nearly 15% from last year and a number that has increased fivefold since Forbes first list twenty years ago. If we assume the workforce to be roughly half the world's population, you have about a .0000002% chance of joining the club. I think that is approximately the same odds of being hit by lightning every day for nine months (but, obviously, much more desirable).
The good news for those reading this blog entry, though, is that you don't have to come up with computer software that revolutionizes the world or even be very wise with your investments. Hell, you don't even necessarily need to invest. Screw the Smith-Barney maxim of earning money the old-fashioned way.
Instead, the fastest-growing way in which to make your way onto the list next year is the intenet, paricularly through online gambling. The company that owns partypoker.com saw three of its founders earn enough coin for inclusion.
So, fret not. If you're feeling the financial crunch that so many are, there is hope. And if you've been setting your sites on being a millionaire, aim higher. Keep cranking out blog entries about methoselioma, refinancing debt, and insurance - as well as setting up an online gambling site - and you're well on your way.
