Tell me something. Am I being unreasonable that I want to beat my sister? She felt the need to tell my son about 9/11, and then, when they were renting a movie, she let him pick out United 93. My position is that he's 7, he seems obsessed with it, and he knows that it happened in New York and that both of his parents are getting on a plane to go there within a week, this close to the 5 year anniversary. When I found out she rented it, I made it clear to my mom that he was NOT to watch it. She said that she didn't think my sister rented it for him. Sure enough, a few minutes later she was talking about him watching it. Did she bother to check the box for the rating? Did she somehow decide that the scene with a boxcutter and an airline attendant was appropriate viewing? Or maybe it was where the plane slams into the ground that sealed it for her. And then she had the nerve to say that it was "unfair" that he couldn't watch the movie he picked out.

When I vote in favor of forcing people to have a license to become a parent, follow it back to this moment.

I think that there are some

I think that there are some choices that should only be made by the parents. I know that when any of us were 7, we would have had no problem watching/handling a movie like that (of course, I'm Canadian so... my parents would not really be on planes to NY etc). Everyone is different, however, and choices regarding children should really be made by the parents (not grandparents, aunts etc).

I'm glad you put your foot down!

Brenna, no he didn't watch

Brenna, no he didn't watch it. I just don't think it's appropriate for him. He'll find out soon enough, and I think like most important conversations, it will be a gradual process, rather than a one time talk.

DarkAmber, I know exactly what you mean. I think my four year old daughter could handle it better than he could. Not that I'm going to let her either... He is a sensitive boy, and he gets so caught up in his head sometimes. I don't want to leave him at my mom's house a big drivelling ball of nerves, and I can tell from the way he's been talking about it that it's really on his mind. I want him to just be a child right now. I want him to still think airplanes and skyscrapers are cool. And I don't think that would be his reaction after seeing it. And yeah, I trust her to make decisions as far as whether to feed him chicken or beef. Not when to introduce him to the concept of terrorism.
