X-Men Films
Films
The first attempts to make a film version of the X-Men began in the late 1980s along with Spider-Man and Hulk films. James Cameron, director of Aliens and The Terminator, was rumored to have been selected as director, but the project never came to fruition. In 1996, FOX produced a television movie based on the X-Men spin-off Generation X.
In 2000, 20th Century Fox released X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer. The $75 million adaptation was an instant hit and took in over $296 million worldwide.
In 2003, the sequel X2: X-Men United also directed by Singer, was released and became the sixth highest grossing film of the year. This film was loosely based on the 1982 graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills. It was a big hit, grossing over $407.5 million worldwide. The second movie followed the comics a little more closely than the first movie. However, it did not go without it's inconsistencies. Lady Deathstrike in the movie, played by Kelly Hu, was actually Wolverine's lover in the comics. In the movie, Wolverine acted as though he didn't even know her and he ends up killing her which certainly does not happen in the comics. Also, a little hint to something in the comics was the scene with Mystiques interaction with Night Crawler while they are in the woods. What some people may not realize is that she is Night Crawlers mother.
In 2006, a third movie X-Men: The Last Stand directed by Brett Ratner was released. The film was loosely based on the comic story "Gifted," by Joss Whedon, and The Dark Phoenix Saga. Singer was originally slated to direct the film but left the project to work on Superman Returns. Matthew Vaughn was then selected to take Singer's place but dropped out in June 2005 due to "personal issues", resulting in the project being given to Ratner. X-Men: The Last Stand became the most successful movie of the franchise, making over $458.7 million, and holds the record for biggest Memorial Day opening of all time, $122.9 million.
* The X-Men films have grossed more than $600 million at the domestic box office and more than $1.1 billion worldwide.
