WritingUp DOES Use Illegal Traffic
Don't get me wrong, WritingUp was my home for a while. But since they've been having problems, I decided to come here. I almost went back last night, though. Someone here mentioned illegal traffic exchanges used by WritingUp, and wouldn't you know it, they have their logs public.
What the hell is this? This is their first page of logs.

and it goes on and on. hitspages.com, directcash.us.. I count hundreds of hits from traffic or click exchanges in the last hour alone.
What shocks me most is this is PUBLIC! I could have seen this anytime. Anyone could see this anytime. Anyway, I took my AdSense account off there and I suggest you do the same. I wonder now whether Bloggerparty does this, too?

Maybe I'm just dense
and since I'm not up on all the techie talk, what the heck does this mean? Could you maybe break it down into laymen's terms and a simple explanation?
Referrers
This is their referer log on the site. That means this is where traffic is coming in from. It's illegal for Google Adsense to get traffic from traffic exchanges and click exchanges. Click exchanges are exchanges where people go and click each other's adsense ads - highly illegal.
I'm sure that this wasn;t done by the owners.
Thanks for the heads up. This is probably being done by the newbies at the site. Some people don;t bother reading TOS. In the beginning of writingup, some people got their adsense accounts revoked because of illegal tactics that were being practiced by PEOPLE THAT DON'T BOTHER READING THE TOS!!! I took my adsense off for a long time and then I put it up again after the witch hunt. A few good people lost their adsense because of a few morons that want to get rich quick without working for it! I'm taking my adsense off again!
Anyway, I wanted to share this entry. I thought you would appreciate it.

Mayhaps
You could be correct in that. The owners need to do something about it, though, that's for sure.
Definitely!
I believe Dan and John will close people's accounts when they find out. I know John makes a living off google and that's before writingup.com. I researched him thoroughly before I joined the site. You can never be too cautious, (I'm a NYer ya know!)
Anyway, they will do something because he's not going to risk losing his livelihood over some idiots. (The guy has kids and a wife he has to provide for.) I'm taking my adsense off now!

well that just really sucks
I hate that they would allow something like this to happen. I started over there and now I'm scared of what my happen, guess I'm taking mine off too.
hate it
oh please. i just hope everybody does know that each time they sign up for something, there are things called TERMS OF AGREEMENT or TERMS OF SERVICE. that is most probably why many people think they are scammed out of their savings and all when they do not even know just what they have signed up for!
I'm not sure what you mean.
I'm not sure what you mean. Those traffic exchanges are putting everyone at risk, I would think. So one person doesn't read the TOS and then everyone suffers from it.
Thanks, Champ
I just pulled my AdSense off of WritingUp too. Haven't logged on in more than a month and don't intend to return.
Maybe Brenda-behind-the-curtain can tell us how hard/easy it is to keep track of all this stuff as a sysadmin. As the superuser you can just about do anything on a server, but keeping on top of it all the threads and activities is perhaps harder than it looks.
sorry but
in defense of all newbie bloggers, of course there is a TOS..... does one really interpret it to say that we may use illegal traffic to get you into trouble with Google, but don't say we didn't tell you so? Don't click on your own ads, cuz we've already got that covered? Or am I just hearing all this wrong?
In few ...
... 'cause my knowledge is sketchy. One does not click on one's own ads. One does not click on anybody else's ads within Bloggerparty unless you are REALLY interested in what is being advertised.
A "traffic exchange" is clicking on blogs (usually of your buddies) only to increase their apparent popularity (and, in return, that of your own).
A "click exchange" is clicking on blog ads (usually of your buddies) only to give that blog some dough (and, you hope, get some yourself in return).
Both activities are fraudulent, and hence banned under TOS.
Hope that helps. Hope it's right ...
I hope that
I hope that the people who get in trouble with google will be the people whose blogs are actually clicked on through the click exchanges, not everyone else. Because my maybe two clicks a week are certainly NOT coming from exchanges!
