Writers: does this crap annoy you too?

missmaster's picture

I just finished looking through the job bank of a certain freelance writing website and very nearly committed myself to the next few years of trying to remove regurgitated foodstuffs from between my keyboard keys. There was this job posting you see, looking for articles. This particular job poster wanted ORIGINAL articles for a website. Ok. I'll take a quick look at that, I thought. Speed read down to the price and OH MY GOD! He was offering the grand sum of 50 cents per article. 50 bloody cents!!! Can you believe it?? Now it didn't specify a word length for these articles but I would take an 'article' to be at least 500 words, wouldn't you think? I would barely write a sentence for that pitiful amount of money! These people fail to realise that there are a lot of writers out there, including me, that are trying to MAKE A BLOODY LIVING out of what we do! This just insults our intelligence. So listen up you tight-asses out there who expect a lot for bugger all: don't insult our intelligence with ridiculously small amounts of money. Either that or don't expect any articles: expect a short sentence if you're lucky! Remember the old phrase: you get what you pay for! Ok I'm off for a stiff drink to calm the hell down.

Would this have been...

Freelancewriting.com? And let me guess, you don't get a byline. These are ghostwritten articles. This sounds like something I've seen on that site. It seems like some of these low paying gigs keep getting cheaper and cheaper. I understand that when you first start freelancing that you should charge lower rates than someone who has been in the business a while, but they should at least be reasonable. Next time, have that drink before you look at that job board. ;)

Ouch Re: Freelance writing

That's harsh. That's insulting. That's just plain RUDE!

Thank goodness I gave up my life ambitions of being a writer. ;)

I know...

Freelancewriting.com is basically where I got started in freelancing. I started with low paying gigs, but NEVER that low. The important thing I got from the site, though, were the contacts not the jobs. Jobs I got there led to bigger and better ones and eventually my independence. Again, though, I saw that same ad and 50 cents is utterly rediculous.

Take matters into your own hands!

50 cents? That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard all day (and think, it's 3:30 AM I have been reading blogs for a couple hours!)

Then again,

If you read my reply on the Blogging Disappointment entry, I've made a whopping twenty cents for a week's worth of blogging, so I suppose fifty cents for 1/2 hour's writing would be a step up for some.

So frustrating!

And the fact that people will write for fifty cents an article causes problems for the rest of us. Sigh.
