Would School Uniforms Improve Our Schools?

School Uniform Purpose
In cities like Detroit and Jersey City, school uniforms can be useful. They are a great way of controlling gang attire. Many feel that uniforms are also a way of making children obey rules and develop work ethic. When children enter the world of work, the parents said, some will be in jobs that require them to dress in a particular way. Students already subjected to the discipline of wearing uniforms will be in a better position to comply, the parent said. Others feel that having all students dress in the same attire eliminates bullying, theft and other issues. In addition, children no longer have to worry about what to wear.

Those opposing school uniforms feel that forcing a child to dress a particular way limits their individuality and creativity. They think uniforms are directly linked to rebellion and depression. Another argument is cost and comfort. People say that uniforms or no uniforms, children will still bully other children.

School Uniforms

I am on the fence on this one... I only have personal experiences to go by (not factual evidence). The school principal who first brought uniforms to an Oregon public elementary school, is a close family friend... and she absolutely LOVED the idea. It was a low-income school... so it seems that having uniforms meant one less thing for the kids/parents to have to worry about...These days, school uniforms in public schools is all over -- I know several schools in the Seattle/Tacoma area that require them.

Personally, I don't know that I would've liked having to wear a uniform (I'm too much of a jeans/t-shirt kind of girl), but I wouldn't mind my future (way, way, way in the future) kids wearing uniforms to school, public or private...

Anyway, that's my opinion... is there any evidence that suggests that school uniforms in schools boosts students performance and decreases discipline problems, etc.? That would be interesting to see...

and the norm was uniforms in schools. The kids had choices like zippered sweatshirts,khakis, skirts, and even shorts. I did notice that the kids were less aware of the "in" style and families only had to invest in "play" clothes. In many ways I wish we had uniforms in the U.S. I now teach 4th grade here, and there is definitely a dividing line between the haves and the have nots already. Little kids don't need that at such a young age.

I have no strong opinions either way. I think school uniforms can be helpful, or they can be institutional. This is one debate where I can easily see both sides of the argument.

A quick story: In high school, we had a guy who came to school one day wearing a t-shirt that had a topless woman on it. Not to make excuses for him, because I think it was inexcusable, but it was a small picture, and you had to look pretty closely to see what was what. He was told to go home and change. Well, he did. lol That's where the trouble really began. While at home, he took the opportunity to spike his long hair in every direction, and color it purple. Also, although he was no longer wearing the offending shirt, he came to school in a bathrobe. This was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my entire life. Needless to say, they made him go home again. Somehow, I believe that even school uniforms would not have kept his individuality under control. lol
