WORDSWORTH'S NATURE POETRY - OR OUR CIVILISED URBAN LIFE?
The period of the English Literature from 1800 to 1830 is often known as the age of WILLIAM WORDSWORTH. He was also poet laurate of Britain for seven years.
I am not sure why he was tired of the city life, but he wrote to pastoral poetry and despised the urban life as QUOTIDIAN AND PEDESTRIAN.
When we read reports about the philandering of Mr.Bill Clinton or the shooting adventures of Mr. Cheney, we cannot avoid being repulsed by the civilisations. These two are not incidents in isolation. Every day thousands of incidents take place throughout the globe, but then the perpetrators are not at the apex of the world like Clinton or Cheney.
TAIL PIECE
REAL LIFE STORY BASED ON NEWSPAPER REPORTS
(Names are not being mentioned for brevity and as they are immaterial).
A College in a City. One student was studying Accounts for becoming a Chartered Accountant. He was staying in a private hostel, as his College did not have a hostel. Four days he did not attend the College. After four days the College authorities could contact the youth on the phone and enquire about his absence. He said he was unwell.
The next day, the boy was found dead falling under a train. The police investigation is under process.
The father of the boy collected men and attacked the College, calling explanations and demanding a compensation of a large sum. After a few days, the College owners invited the father for compromise talks . At the College, they bet him and paraded him on a donkey, got him photographed.
The Police started another investigation.
Now, the question is ARE WE LIVING IN A CIVILISED SOCIETY?
Are the days worse or better than the days of the nature poet Wordsworth?
