Windfall
Now here's a concept: NBC's newest tv show depicts the lives of a group of friends who enter the state lottery together and win. Suddenly, as the money hits their hands we see how it affects them, and tears them apart. In my opinion this is a shameless kick in the crotch.
First we get to watch people who are paid very well pretend they suddenly came into money. I know they're actors and stretch themselves to fit the role but this is too far. How would they really be affected? I know how affected I'd be. After paying off my buttload of bills, putting a down payment on a real home and getting my family out of the shit hole we live in, I'd say that we'd be ready for life-changing drama.
Second, when you turn on the tv do you really want to watch a show about people loaded with money when you're struggling to make ends meet? I don't. My wallet's so tight it squeaks every time I touch it. The last thing I want to see is love triangles or bitter rivalries when I need money to pick up groceries or pay off my power bill.
If I hit a jackpot with a bunch of friends we'd spend it and go about business, maybe with nicer cars and occasional family trips to something more fun then the local park, but outside of that we'd lack the luster that this show alludes to. I guess I'm rather plain and not worthy of a nighttime soap opera. Well boo-hoo.
I've got a concept: lets give poor people a winning lottery ticket and let them finally experience life that is debt free. Wouldn't that be a hoot?
