Will United States Make It To The Second Round?

Currently US are ranked the fifth best team in the world by FIFA. So, in an ideal case, US must be advancing to the second round as runners up alongside Czech Republic, who are placed second in the current best teams list. But, frankly, how many of us are ready to buy such a possibility?

Call it tradition or precedent; the Czechs and Azzuris are touted as the potential advancers to the second round. In the eyes of football pundits, US is the third best team in the group (Ghana is the other team in group E), the FIFA rankings not withstanding. Further, honestly, this is the result what most of the rest of the world expects after 22 June 20:00 hrs.

So it is up to Bruce Arena and his team to prove that FIFA rankings indeed reflect the true standings of the teams in a global perspective, in terms of strength and skill, and past laurels or tradition alone cannot take a team forward in a competition such as the world cup.
