Will Sensible Muslim People Please Stand Up?

There is really nothing that the Muslim world could have done to set themselves back a few centuries than begin and continue this holy war against Danish cartoons. The longer that this nonsense goes on, the more people are realizing that it really isn't about the cartoons at all.....it's really about radical Islam finding an excuse to behead a few more people, burn and pillage some more, terrorize their immediate vicinity and the rest of world some more, make some more outrageous claims and demands. In general, they are making fools of themselves.

The conservative and moderate elements of the Muslim world would do well to stand up and make their own loud noise....NOW! Irreparable damage has already been done to the name of Islam and it's people. But the shards and remnants could still be salvaged if responsible leaders would take a stand and put the radicals soundly in their place.

Having said all that, I do not see this happening and fear to think where this will eventually lead.

I'm sure most people think it's way too harsh

And various other bullshit along those lines. But until the entire middle-east is a radioactive wasteland the world will not be safe.

The problem is not that the Islamic world has a higher propensity for terrorism than the rest of the world. It's that they think there is no recourse against them. How long until Muslim peoples around the world sit down and shut up once Mecca is a crater and every agitator in the middle east is dust?

no one has the right to hurt

no one has the right to hurt any one's feelings or faith

No one has the right to NOT BE OFFENDED

Everyone is at risk of having their feelings hurt or faith questioned. Where do you even come up with such crap?

Even In The US

It's life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness. Not life, liberty, and happiness. And, the US is the most forward country in the world on that aspect of life, by far.

Thats how Wars Start

Hurting the religeous sentiment of anybody is bound to lead to protestations. Some protest in a dignified way and some would protest in an extreme manner.

One wrong leads to another wrong and people like Maverick add fuel to that. Too sad. Let's stop it here and now. Passing infuriating comments doesn't help.

When things like this happen our job is not to vent our anger in blogs and add fuel to already existing fire.

Can we keep it in mind that all Muslims are not extremists. Majority of them are peace loving people like you and me. Only a few are extremists.

Can we keep an eye open for terrorist actvities in our areas and be vigil enough to alert the police if anything looks fishy?

That would be more practical and advisable. Passing infuriating comments will only make extreme muslims to be more ruthless. History is the proof of it.

So lets stop this holier than thou attitude and start showing compassion to good muslims. At the same time be vigilant.

re: noise

The principal noise I hear right now is that of bombs being set off in Islamic mosques by other Moslems.

Almost as loud as the bombs set off in Christian churches by other Christians (Ireland, Serbia ...)

HYPOCRITICAL, adj. A drug addict complaining about the quality of the needle and syringe. By far the most common form of criticism now employed in the United States of America.

What a Reply O Ceallaigh

Thats right. People should realize that condemnable acts of a few should not be generalized as the acts of Muslims, Christians or Americans.

wordsman, you really need to get a clue

A Danish Newspaper prints some cartoons, multiple millions of Muslims around the world have taken to the street chanting DEATH TO AMERICA in response. Not just the ones blowing themselves up or hijacking planes.

Maybe you missed it. But, let me bring back one little reminder of the events of September 11, 2001.

When the news hit the middle east...

Millions of Muslims took to the streets cheering.

It's not about if I think it's a good or right thing to do to blow up innocent people.

It's that I love my daughters. And if I have a choice between blowing up a whole shitload of innocent people or having the tinsiest tiniest risk to my daughters because these "innocent people" were the sworn mortal enemies of my daughters before they were even born, guess who's fertilizer?

re: cheering

Well, given this country's longstanding, consistent, and almost completely isolated support for the state of Israel, what did you expect? Besides, such a response is well attested in history. It was the response of the South to the bombardment of Fort Sumter. It was the response of Japan to Pearl Harbor.

For those who think that "support of Israel" is an unqualified good thing, I strongly recommend The Birth of Israel: Myths and Realities by the Polish Zionist Simha Flapan (Plenum Press) - a book as important for understanding the misconceptions surrounding Israel and its founding, in my opinion, as is Day of Deceit by Robert Stinnett for understanding Pearl Harbor.

guess who's fertilizer?

I have daughters too. To whom we taught the principle, one of those at the core of our nation's (supposed) philosophy of government, our "great experiment", that one is innocent until proven guilty. That it is better to grant liberty to the guilty than to risk hanging even one innocent fellow human. Precisely the opposite of your statement. That's a worry.

Maverick's picture

You did miss something in the principle of that statement

It's not the big universal "one" who is innocent until proven guilty. It is only citizens. It also only refers to judicial crime and punishment, not the military or war, right?

re: principle

You have a point. But I would not go so far as to demonize a whole people just because their leaders disagree with our leaders. Or even if their leaders are at war with ours.

What motivates a mass of people anyway? I recommend On Aggression by Konrad Lorenz, who examines the phenomenon of "military enthusiasm" and other mechanisms by which humans (and other social animals) mobilize themselves in groups for the purpose of contending with a threat. Real or imagined.

Lorenz was one of the 20th century's most respected scientists in the field of animal and human behavior. He was also a field surgeon in the Wehrmacht. I have written about Lorenz, and my take on his work in the context of 9/11, here.

By the way, I'm not a peacenik. I'm pissed as hell that we were stupid enough to get ourselves into the mess in Iraq. But Colin Powell was right: "You break it, you fix it". Now that we're in, we must stay. Or we will convince our enemies, not to mention our friends (if we have any left), that what they have long suspected is true. That we're cowards as well as idiots. No. We (and I do mean "we") started this, we must finish it. And please pass this message on to your rich friends in their well-stocked clubs, Mr. Bush. We need to pay for our staying. That means taxes. And that means you, Mr. World-Record-Profits Exxon-Mobil.

Why Don't We dance in the streets?

Just a thought.....are we smarter, more educated? Or do we not care about the rest of the world. The only things that seem to set Americans on fire is homosexuality or abortion. We'll jump up and down when that issue is brought before us. Weird isn't it?
