There is something special about a piece of period furniture. You can imagine Henry VII decided to behead his wives on your own banquet chairs. Furniture has its own fashion that parallels the development of culture. Furniture, its function and design, can tell you a lot about an era. Throughout time furniture has been made in many ways; with a variety of materials and decorated by many methods; inlaying, painting or gilding, wood carving, veneering, and marquetry.

A web release by BestFurnitureonline noted that western furniture’s main influences were Egyptian, Asian (Persian and Chinese), Greek and Gothic. According to this same web release originally a few pieces of furniture were in demand; namely stools, beds, chests [oh er] and tables. This is quite interesting when you consider the array of furniture available for our greedy selves these days. The web release also notes the characteristics of furniture from significant historical periods from 6,000 years ago to this present day.

  • Oriental furniture exhibits carving and inlay on ebony and teak.
  • Egyptian furniture displays an advanced form of woodworking, structure, and decoration. Often identified by inlays of gold and ivory and by carved supports representing animal forms.
  • Greek furniture favored low couches, the tripod, and a chair with graceful, curved outlines.
  • The Romans combined Greek and Etruscan examples to produce their key pieces. During the imperial period the Romans developed many ornately decorated variations.
  • The 20th century witnessed the increased usage of technological techniques in furniture productions. This lead to the creation of such pieces as the all-metal folding chairs, metal-legged chairs, the Slumber Chair, moulded plastic chairs and ergonomic chairs. The recliner became a popular form during this period; in part this was due to the increase in the past times of radio listening and television watching.
  • The modern furniture movement of the 1960s produced new forms of chairs also: the butterfly chair, Bean bags, the egg or pod chair, massage chairs. Technological application led to the usage of molded plywood and laminate wood chairs, as well as chairs made of leather or polymers.
