Why Meat?

OK. Get this. First God creates a planet full of animals and only
two people: Adam and Eve. But the animals are off limits to them.
Whatever. Fast forward. The earth has just been destroyed by the
mother of all floods. There are only TWO of each species of animal
left, but eight people! So what does God do? He gives the OK for
these scarce creatures to be put on the menu. Yet I have to believe
their creator wants them to strive just as much as He wants the humans
to thrive.
Wouldn't it have made more sense to allow Adam and family to
eat the plentiful animals while they outnumbered the humans, and then
forbidden Noah and family to eat them until their populations were
back to pre-flood levels?
