Why is Sci-Fi Rocking So Damn Hard? Cuz They Totally Are...

manodogs's picture

They so are.

The weirdest thing is that, no matter how much a geek I am otherwise, I never really got into the Sci-Fi Channel until Ghost Hunters started a couple years back. Oh, I'd flip over and check it out if nothing else was on, or if it was a horror movie (they often show stuff like Fright Night, The Lost Boys, and so on), but as for their regular fare (Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, so on), it just never stroked my goat... er, whatever. Regardless, Sci-Fi was the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Channel and nothing more -- until they canceled that -- and then it became just "nothing more."

But something happened. And I hate to say it, but I think that something was when NBC bought them.

Now, I heard Mike Nelson (or one of the MST3K guys -- I think it was Mike) say that the exec. who canceled the show was the one who had "rescued" USA, TNT, and similar cable networks, by scheduling rasslin on them -- and sure enough, ECW is now on Sci-Fi (does that even hardly make sense? -- I guess, in a weird sort of way, it does, but...) -- but I have no idea if it's the same person still running the network. Regardless, Sci-Fi has apparently received a sudden influx of money because the quality of their shows has gone from Star Trek rip-offs and utter shit original movies to some really good stuff!

Ghost Hunters is, hands-down, the ultimate reality TV show. Now they are running Dead Like Me (and here) on Tuesdays before the fantastic new series, Eureka (to be reviewed in full in a later blog); the new Night Stalker series, originally on ABC, is coming soon (and they're showing the original, never-before-aired, final episodes); Dark Angel is on Mondays; they have at least 2 or 3 new series starting up soon (including a very interesting-looking one called The Dresden Files); the new Who Wants to Be a Superhero? with Stan Lee has been getting heavy promotion across the entire channel guide...

I have to admit, aside from Hex and Adult Swim, Sci-Fi has become my new station to watch.

It's like, no matter how "mainstream" and socially-acceptable I try to be, The Geek Within just won't let go.
