Why Do People Care????

Celebrity

I ask, “why do PEOPLE care?” instead of “why do WE care?” because I know I surely don’t! I really don’t care what celebrities are doing or who they’re doing it with. They’re just people with more money than the rest of us! Big woo!

Something I’ve noticed in the last few weeks is not only the ridiculous-with-a-capital-R “Brittney watch” segments that are all over the place, but long time celebrities having confrontations they shouldn’t have to have. George Clooney & Julia Roberts are two that have stopped the cameramen in their tracks for endangering them and other people with their reckless behavior. What the hell??? How the hell can anyone justify driving recklessly outside of an elementary school??? No one needs Julia’s picture that bad!

It’s funny when you think back to the early days of celebrity magazines. The photographers did everything they could to be unseen by the actors they were shooting. Why? Well, following people around and invading their privacy wasn’t considered cool! Fast forward to today and it’s just normal behavior. Man, I just don’t get it!

It’s really not a big mystery how all this came to be. We love the beautiful people and thanks to the web we have an even broader beauty pool to draw from! It’s not like it’s only the super famous that feel this pressure anymore, either! A friend of mine from myspace is someone ya’ll here might not know, but, William Butler is known to horror fans to the tune of thousands! He’s been killed by all the greats ~ Jason, Freddy, etc. ~ and even bar-b-qed and eaten by zombies in the remake of Night of the Living Dead. And though he’s not being followed by the crew who form Brittney Watch, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to be very careful with his privacy or that rabid fans aren’t trying to “All About Eve” him. I’ve had a few nice little chats with him and he’s been very supportive, so that only makes me a bigger cheerleader of his! (Er, check out ‘ Furnace ’ when you get the chance! My favorite Bill quote : “Just in time for Christmas! Children on fire!”) But, I also need to point out that he’s been harassed and even stolen from by others he’s lent his support to. Yep, people can really suck!

And, there’s also Chris Briggs. I don’t know him personally, but do know his work. On the featurette section of the Hostel dvd, he makes comment about a non-fan of his writing pretty nasty remarks on imdb.com. Out of curiosity I looked up his page and was surprised to see the number of regular folks who had something to say about this behind the scenes prod. I mean, when did folks outside of writers and directors become even remotely interested in producers???? I’d personally walk through fricking coals to have him produce one of my screenplays, but that’s due to his massive creativity and attention to detail. I mean, dude really rocks! But, why would anyone else care to the point of writing “Chris Briggs is not hot, not happening ~ I want to bury him in a corn field”??? Hmm, maybe she’s an ex-girlfriend.

So, really ~ what the hell is the big, bloody deal??? I’ve said forever that I have no interest in fame because it’s not worth what you lose ~ privacy, security and even safety. Thank God no one gives a shit about screenwriters! But, once you get past the “what movie they made” and “who are they dating” it really gets boring doesn’t it? Seriously, why does anybody care how often a star goes to Starbucks??? Especially when there’s that 13 year old boy from Arizona who built that school in Africa! Or the millions of holocaust documents, that after a solid year of untangling red tape, are now available to the public and scholars! Holocaust survivors can now finally find closure and peace in discovering the fates of their lost family members. How the fuck can Brittney taking a drug test even compare????

It should be as easy as turning a blind eye to the spectacle. If we don’t build it ~ they won’t come. So, why the hell are we still watching????

Great Blog!!!

I like what you wrote and agree with you completely. Thank you.

spookyyank's picture

thanks, Brandi

I thought of this after watching the news segment on that boy in Arizona. It occured to me that more people would be talking about the latest Brittney news than that incredible kid! It just makes no sense to me

I'm also glad to see more and more new faces here! I know I've seen your handle before and will make the effort to read your blog more often. Thanks for stopping by mine!

And we have that David Beckham in the news here...

that Pommy soccer star married to one of the Spice girls - a spouse of a Spice? He's been swooning all the girls and some of the boys too - he came to Aussie, and Wellington yesterday with his LA soccer team.A soccer star in rugby country - makes me cold actually!

Beckham!

You know, I only recently learned that Mrs. Beckham and posh spice were the same person! I honestly didn't know! Ya, I must be honest again and say that learning a Brit had come over here to play on one of our teams in a sport we don't normally make a big deal about - I figured he must be a wanker.

Actually, it' spretty easy, Spooky,...

it's all about the money. Back in the day, there were 2 or 3 celebrity magazines. Now there's at least 50 or so, and each of them is trying to be the first to get something on someone, and, of course, when they can't, then they make it up. We can call it the "National Enquirer" syndrome if we'd like to.

So, we long as we have these periodicals that will pay upwards of $100,000 for just the right picture, so that they can charge their advertisers big bucks, this is the type of thing we're going to have to put up with.

Reviews of Everything, reviews and opinions of, well, almost anything!

spookyyank's picture

Show me the money?

Ya, it's true. It's all about the money. But, with all the internet "news" places you'd think that a celeb. photog. wouldn't make much scratch anymore! If a guy in Jersey can produce a website just as good as the big boys, but for less the money - well, it should have made the field a lot less popular.
Of course, I can't claim perfection or innocence since it was me not long ago doing search after search for personal info on that actor! Sure, my actions were not for the sake of evil (not completely pure, but not evil!) but I did use the press to find out what I wanted to know. So, obviously, there's no easy answer and may even be no way to end it since we all have come to expect that crap to be available for the reading!

spooky this is also happening in the UK. I have a real

problem with what used to be called gossip being peddled as news, I say that it is gossip because that's where this type of thing used to be printed in the newspapers - in the gossip columns. Perhaps it is part of a government campaign to make our outlook so trivial that our brains turn to mush and we stop questioning what they do.Hatsrus

spookyyank's picture

exactly, hats

There was a small place for it in the papers and that was all! But, as catfish points out, too many of us make it happen. So, I guess the only thing to do is try not to watch.

How you been???? I've been thinking of you lately. How's France?

The almighty dollar:(

Sassys

we get angry at our politicians for spending billions the wrong way and yet we ALL partake in the crap that is literally jammed down our throats...a great solution is to TURN OFF the TV and pick up a book! I rarely even watch tv..partly because of my job...it is sporadic in that my shifts do change, so I don't get "hooked" on any one show. I do an awful lot of reading, and didn't even realize how much I had missed it!
Then when it comes to Magazines and "News"papers, they are all so full of adds, that if you read a headline that catches your eye, part two of that story is on page 6 and that's because pages 1,2,3,4,and 5 are one big fat add. The media is part and parsel, but we are the ones that actually demand this crap....so the question is "Just how friggin young IS this country?"...Britney? Eeeeew and WTF?? Yet again I'm with ya here Spooky.

spookyyank's picture

And that's the real problem

You're right! we can bitch all we want about the media, but at the end of the day it's the people demanding it! When I think of those magazines from back in the day, like 'Look' ~ there was a whole other thing going on with the public's curiosity. It was more about seeing the good things a celeb was doing or just to see how rich and famous people lived. "Hey Maude, that Joan Craford wears the same shade of lipstick as you!". It was sooo much less harmfull than now. NOW, what people are about is the humiliation. No one cares if they're happy or doing good. It's all about being better than the celebs! It's like we've become so immune that we now need to get our jolly's from pain and suffering. I mean, I wonder how many of the magazine buyers realize that their obsession with Britney Spears is actually contributing to the damage being done to those kids! OR, how by being an active part of this cycle they're encouraging their own kids to have the worst of role models! Thanks to this crap teenagers are learning that bad behavior is rewarded and REALLY bad behavior gets you a multi-milion dollar contract! It's just stupid.

Sure, I read the headlines at the check out. Can't help it. But, the magazines I BUY generally have to do with skin care, weight loss, home decorating or cooking (ya, there's a laugh!). On a rare occasion I'll buy the world weekly news to read about whatever crazy they have going on! Remember "Bat Boy"??? LOL

We should start our own magazine! One where we follow and photograph total strangers! We can get pics of them without make up and make up the stories to go with it! "Did this soandso have plastic surgery???" "Are the soandso's getting divorced??" "Who is that man soandso is having lunch with???"
I wonder how funny people would find it if the tables were turned and their lives were open for public debate!

You know what it's manifested,...

all these young girls who buy web cams, then start doing these dirty dances and go nude for anyone who wants to pop in over the internet. There are just so many pictures of girls who get nude, then later seem to be shocked that their pictures have spread so far, and instead of getting embarrassed, believe they can make a lot of money and set up websites so they can post all their pictures, make more, and get deeper into it.

It's all about the money, but secondarily I guess it's also about the fame. There's this show about some woman named Tila Tequila, and I guess she started out as an internet nude model. So, maybe people figure if it can work for her,...

Yes, exactly catfish

and it's a shame. Ya'll know that I'm a big ol' capitalist! I love that we can make money or even tons of money by offering something new and unique. And, in the begining of those sites you speak of, it WAS something ingenius started by female college students as a way of paying tuition and living better than a Top Ramin diet! But, sadly, too many youbg girls have been influenced into thinking it's a good way of having fame. Girls so young just don't have the maturity to understand what kind of impact they're making on their lives - and even their psychies! I'm not saying it's good for anyone, but as I understand it, the women who began the trend knew their limits and took some kind of measures to make sure their business wouldn't reflect too badly on them when they left school and entered the professional world.
Like that guy who started Girls Gone Wild. I love the dude! He saw a market and ran with it! And, I just don't see what he does as exploitive because you can't really exploit the really willing! I find the phenom horrifying, but that horror is for the girls who find such a thing a good way to be famous! That's what I hate. Even when working as a stripper, I'd call those girls stupid for using their bodies to make SOMEONE ELSE rich! If anything, he's exploiting the stupidity of the "modern young female". THAT bothers me to no end! But, again - that's only due to the freakshow the girls create.

Oh, and that Tila Tequila! She's clearly enjoying the ride, but I have to wonder how she'll feel down the line. Ya know, when she's all about having a real career and no one is taking her seriously because she'd only been a side show attraction that has long since lost the curiosity of the public. Sure, she can pose nude, she can party til dawn, she can have all kinds of unihibited sex! Is there any part of her that looks in the mirror and says "I've become famous from laying on my back! Why didn't I showcase my TALENT as a way to get here???"
She does seem like a nice person, so at some point the rest of us will only be feeling sorry for her. She'll end up a D list celeb who chases reality rehab shows to pay the rent. That's a really sad reality for someone who does seem like a good person.

You know, I recently bought a cheap webcam (the one I used to take those crappy pics of the bloody post office!) and set it up to work just last night. I am so excited about having it so that I can have online chats with my sister! And, secondary to that is being able to have online chats with my fellow bloggers and posting some things of the kid being crazy! Nothing says "isn't my kid cool?" than by posting live action clips of her yelling screen directions to actors in movies! Or, after explaining that she LOVES the tv show Chuck to the point of making up her own Chuck SONG, and then taping her singing it! Er, being nude or raunchy? Don't think so! LOL

Now THAT is a great idea Spooky!!

Sassys

Only I would take it further...I would do what some (George Clooney) celebrities have tried doing...follow the Paparazzi around and take their pictures all over the place...rent a Helicopter and follow their kids etc...give them a taste of their own hysteria. The only problem is that it wont bring us enough money to pay for the film:(

spookyyank's picture

ya, and

how would we be able to live with ourselves knowing that we freaked out little kids by following them???? Sure, it'd drive home to the idiot shutterbugs, but hurt the kids! Doesn't that just suck???? I love that idea, yet...........

But, I still think targetting the people who buy the crap would end it sooner. If no one buys it, the shutterbugs become uneeded. *sigh* Nice fantasy, huh?

I've always said that, Spooky,...

you can't exploit the willing. Course, I first have to express my disappointment that we won't get to see any of that nude and raunchy (cough). LOL

I just finished watching this movie called American Pimp, kind of a predecessor to the movie "Pimps Up, Ho's Down", about real pimps and the women who become their prostitutes. Put any of these guys into another business and all of them would not only be top businessmen, but they'd probably be considered as experts on women, and that's scary. They fully understand the game, and that's exactly what all this stuff is, a game of some sorts.

And some people really aren't equipped to play the game, and end up getting played.

Reviews of Everything, reviews and opinions of, well, almost anything!

spookyyank's picture

yup!

though, my experience knowing the two women and the two men who ran excort agencies in New Orleans has always left me thinking men shouldn't be in that business! It was always the men made the stupid choices that got people (and themselves!) arrested! But, I have no knowladge of how it is with streetwalkers ~ a whole other thing than being an escort. Although, Nella's gift last night was a set of play rings. And the 10 year old and I had fun teaching her to say "Where's my money???" and "don't make me have to break out the pimp hand!" when she put on all the rings and kinda looked like Huggy Bear!

I mean, I always feel stupid if I get played on anything, but always have to admit that I was at fault for at least some of it. We can't be totally snowed without having some kind of feeling that things aren't right.

Ya, no naked and rauchy! Er, having given birth 4 times, NO ONE needs to see that! LOL

Well, catfish

her brothers are all nearly grown and living with their dad right now. Becoming a mom so young (19) is just one of the reasons I am only now getting my career going. Ya, they're great boys and it's only that they're not in the home right now that I don't have things to teasingly write about them! :-) But, I have written about them. And thrust me, they're just as weird as their sister!
