Who you Calling a Racist?

Submitted by American Rhetor... on January 22, 2008 - 6:10am.

Last nights debate could have been an eye opener for many and may be a turning point in this election. There has been much ado about Race and Racist issues being brought forward in this election. Last night's battle stayed true to that order.

Being a racist does not require that you are white. Several remarks in the last few days reveal that Obama has some serious issues around race. First of all lets remind ourselves that Obama is not 100% black. When asked if Clinton was the "first black president" Obama came back with a half sincere answer of needing to see him dance to determine if he was really a "brother". I find that stereotypical profiling by a "black man" repulsive.

Secondly, When Obama felt it necessary to say that those voting for him needed to vote for what was good for themselves, their children, and this nation and those voting for Hillary needed to vote for what was good for themselves, their children and this nation and well, Those voting for Edwards were .........well??? (Just white Males?) This was so very much a slam against the white male. As if the white male has no place at the democrat table is not only abusive but dangerous. Exactly who does Mr. Obama fell has helped him get to that table? Clue.... Bill Clinton maybe just a little? This assertion of Obama's that if you don't vote for me you are a Racist or if you vote for Clinton you are either a racist or a feminist is ridiculous. This party has always been about supporting the underdog and the downtrodden be it women, black, LGBT, disabled or other wise. Don't play that game at the table that feeds you.

Because Obama is running as the first black candidate there is a “hands off” don’t go there mentality that has overtaken this race. I think that is dangerous and misrepresentative of the party. We need to talk about the true value of race and the true value of bringing all of us together as one party representing the values of the diversity of our party. Not the desperation of one man to achieve the title of the first black president of the USA. Obama seems to have a constant need to play the race card and keep that issue at the top of this election. It's not playing well for the party and it's not getting him any votes from the democrats but rather from the republicans and independents who love this eruption from within the party. Of course they are going to support him being the nominee, but don’t look for those votes in the general. They are working hard to manipulate the democrats to insure their victory in November and we’re doing a pretty good job of allowing that to happen. What better way to secure the republican agenda than to get the opposition in-fighting and destroying the trust within the party? If Obama thinks this has been a bloody battle wait until he becomes the nominee and faces the Republican machine. He hasn't seen blood shed yet.

My point is, we have great candidates and we have much to gain from this election. I fear the point of "it's our election to loose" is very much the case and from what I experienced last night it appears we are well on our way to doing just that.

My car died and until yesterday, I was literally starnded in the boonies unable to go anywhere (or use the net for more than an hour at a time). But, within a few days we'll be off to sunny LA and pitching in! I can only hope there'll still be a need!

I have to agree with you - I'm sick of the race card being played and what Hilary said in the first place was not slighting Mr. King! I like Obama, but don't plan to vote for him. He needs more experience and something more to stand on.

Not to worry, there are plenty of projects going on and Calif. will need you for sure for the Feb 5th vote no doubt.

it's busy for sure. Nevada was a caucus state so it became a really busy and very active place in a quick hurry. It will slow down now and ramp up again by Sept.

Hope you hit L.A. soon.

Ya, I've been keeping an eye on things via the news (well, until the other day). I nearly flew out of my SKIN and raced to the tv when it was reported about that hotage situation in NH! As I walked in the door, my friend told me it'd just been covered and I started yelling "Where! WHERE!!!!". She was so shocked and just looked at me like I was crazy and asked "Why? Who cares?". Wraps her up in a nutshell, huh? Even when I explained that my friend was doing a lot of campaign work, so I kinda needed to know the state at least - she still didn't seem to get it. *sigh*

My plans have been foiled at every turn lately! I'm staying with my brother until we move and he's in Sacramento. Much easier, right???? Nope. For the last 3 days now I've been battling a bad tooth. Now that I feel a bit better - my face is still really swollen. Not something the public needs to see unless they DOUBT the value of dentists! LOL
But, I'll get there soon and hopefully, the race and gender crap will stop! Eh, who am I kidding! The only reason they're using tactics like those is that they have nothing else! Kinda makes you feel more confident doesn't it? They use every trick in the book to point out her gender, yet don't seem to be talking overly much about her past experience in office.

I get what you are saying and I agree that the last thing the Democrats need right now is to be divided...for ANY reason. The problem I have is the total inevitability of the Republicans winning....they are cheats and we KNOW it. They can and will fix this race. They are proud that the new voting machines are up and running...and they have said on more than one occasion, "If anything goes wrong on these machines no one need worry, we will go in there and "FIX" them"...That tells me that it's already a foregone conclusion...and the money being spent is downright disgusting. I hope I am woefully wrong on all these points, but a man that sends a bunch of kids off to war (minus his kids of course)for his own personal gain is more than capable of cheating in an election...he is no better than Chavez.

We must be vigulant!!!!

Infighting only furthers distrust and that will be a sure fire way to hand this election over to those evil bastards. I would LOVE to see Obama and Hilary team up against these idiots...That would be the absolute most powerful message this country could send to the world..."See not only did we vote in a woman...but a black guy too" Now stop calling us rascists etc. *Sigh*

Bill Clinton being the first "black" president? I think most of the people who heard that realized he was joking. It was a ridiculous and demeaning question in the first place and didn't deserve anything more than a brush-off.

As for leaving Edwards out of his answer about who people should vote for, well bless your heart darlin'. As a white female I've been trying to get this through the heads of white males all my life - not everything is about you guys.

You say we have great candidates but, frankly, you seem predisposed against Obama. That's fine. Just don't expect everyone to accept your skewed view on everything that he says and does.

"Hands Off" works for some but not all. I don't have to play into the "white male" assertion and women don't have to play into the "little woman" assertion either. We do have an able and ready female candidate who represents women. Way too many women have succumbed to the male opinion and directive that she isn't capable of leading this nation. I think that is all about the white male way more than electing a black man. You have a right to defend his behavior just like I have a right to call him on it.

It may not be all about "us guys" but it's not all about Mr. Obama and his race either... any more than it’s all about the female in the race.

Oh, I totally agree, AR, that Hilary is absolutely

capable. The woman is brilliant. She's also very good at talking out of both sides of her mouth. I don't trust her to do any more than what is good for Hilary. I think she'd hang the population out to dry in a New York instant if it meant getting what she wants - just like our current Prez has done.

Frankly, I don't see Obama bringing up race. I see lots of other people bringing it up and forcing him to respond to the subject. Well, I see him feeling forced to respond. I think he should just get over it and ignore the BS. I'm sick of hearing about race and gender. I want to hear about the issues. I won't vote for a "Black" candidate and I won't vote for a "Female" candiate. I will vote for the candidate that I think shares my views most closely on the issues of the day.

Wanting to hear about the issues is something none of us may get to hear! There are a FEW in the media who are calling for the race and gender questions to stop, but far more are keeping it going.

I'll go ahead (as if it weren't already obvious!) and say my vote is going to Ms. Hilary. Not only do I think she's capable, but I also don't believe Obama IS. For me (like you) it comes down to who I believe will better the country. I think that Obama doesn't have the experience to keep us out of danger as well as making the choices that would be needed to better the country as a whole. Do I believe that Hilary will fix us? No. But, fixing us is not possible in one presidential term.

As to Obama and the race card - he's distancing himself NOW. But, he quite happily said to news cameras "Hey, she's the one who made a racist remark!". I'm still kinda dumbfounded as to how it was considered racist. She was pointing out the relevance of having a president who will make change - not demeaning Dr. King at all. So, ya, as a hispanic female, I saw it very much as playing the race card. Sure, I had already made my choice at that point, but it was still disheartening to see our very first black candidate use his race in order to get votes. Anyone in any minority group will agree that "the race card" is a very sensitive issue for us. So, I know I'm not the only minority who felt saddened by his initial reaction. He fell right into the trap and then regretted it when the nation cried foul.
It's almost a shame that he couldn't be Hilary's vice, huh?

And to the people who don't see that he was goaded? Hell, I don't really care. I'm just sick of the subject and I think it keeps getting brought up as a smear tactic and by people who are just too damned ignorant to see beyond the subject.

Sorry, I can't agree with him being Hilary's vice. I'm just not a Hilary supporter. And I think one of the very best things about Obama is his lack of experience. I'm sick of career politicians and I think we need a fresh outlook.

And it's (I think) saddest that it's not being dropped because there isn't anything else to bitch about! Oh yes, both candidates see it as a smear campaign and are trying to move away from it. And, really, the experience thing is the only reason I'm not unsure who to vote for. If Hilary dropped out, my vote would swing right to Obana. I also like the idea of having a "fresh start". What worries me, though, is the situation we're in now - the war. To get us out of it will not be easy and it will take someone with previous white house experience to really know what to expect from congress. I figure, if anyone can get us on the right path, it's the woman who was knee deep in white house bullshit for so long. She may not have had the power, but she knows exactly what to expect at each turn.

She'll do what butters her bread and that will probably be what the companies that are making a fortune on the war - the weapons makers, the aircraft makers, etc., etc., not to mention the oil companies - want her to do.

I disagree that previous White House experience is needed to get us out of the war. It's not like the President will be going it alone - whoever it is will have an army of advisors in addition to their Cabinet. And being forced to work with Congress, instead of fighting against it and going around it like Bush is doing, will be the very best thing I can think of.

Last Night on FAUX news there was actually a republican telling the truth. He stated that there are many republicans and independents that have been and continue to register as Democrats in order that they can vote in our primaries and participate in our caucuses. This allows them to stand or vote for Obama in order to make him the nominee. They feel strongly that they can beat Obama in the General and know they can not beat Clinton. I hope the Democrats get out there and vote their will because its going to take a lot of democrats to make up for this force of corruption that is trying once again to manipulate our party. The Polls tell us that the “hard core” democrats support Clinton and all the swing voters and independents are supporting Obama…… Now we know why. They have absolutely no intentions of voting for him in the general. Let’s not let them manipulate us into giving them the white house for another 4 years!
