Who Were My Grandparents?

Submitted by iriscot on April 20, 2007 - 8:58am.

"Who were my grandparents?" I asked myself this question for many years and decided, when I was discharged from the Air Force, I would start searching.

My Father left our little family when my sister was just 3 years old and I wouldn't show up until 5 months later.

I had a cousin who was deeply involved in researching her side of the family and for several years she wanted me to get involved. At the time I was very busy with a business and passed off the suggestion.

Several years went by and my cousin became very ill. My daughter-in-law spent many hours visiting the doctors and hospitals with her. She also spent many hours and traveled several miles in researching cemeteries and libraries looking for information about my cousins' ancestors.

Fifteen years ago my cousin passed away and my daughter-in-law ended up with all of the documents and material they had gathered over the years.

One evening at supper, my son asked the question "I wonder if we could find out who my grandfather was and where he came from". The next day his wife spent many hours on the telephone, using directory service, searching for the name of the state where this grandfather lived.

We knew his name and the name of the town, but not the state. There were three states with towns of that name.
Susan finally came up with the phone number of an aunt of mine and called her on the phone.

Yes, she new my father and she was married to one of his brothers. The lady had a southern accent, since she lived in the southern State of Mississippi. Susan gave me the phone number and urged me to make a phone call, stating that "she was a very nice lady and would love to talk to me."

A few days later I made the call, this led me on a never ending journey, I caught the "fever".

More later .............
