Who benefits from Edwards scandal? Hillary

John Edwards

By GERALD CARROLL

Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., is now disgraced as an adulterer and possible father of mistress Rielle Hunter’s baby. But why now? If it happened in 2006, how could Edwards run for President with a straight face, and deceive everyone around him?

Hillary Clinton

And who blew the whistle, set up the National Enquirer to break the story and start the political firestorm which is sure to follow?

Look no further than supporters of Hillary Clinton, who now faces even less competition for the vice-presidential slot with presumptive nominee Barack Obama. It would not be within the bounds of reality to discover that Hillary’s cultish followers had something to do with the timing of this brutal scandal.

Barack Obama

Only a few weeks back, Obama was seen publicly with Edwards, who has been actively campaigning for Obama. Edwards’ name has surfaced as being a “short list” candidate for vice president. Oops. That’s all come crashing down and Obama now has to scramble to make sure he is not damaged in the aftermath of this story.

That Hunter, a former Edwards campaign aide, is all starry-eyed and overly talkative about this (look for a book deal and more face time on the cable TV talk shows) means big trouble for the Democratic Party approaching the convention season. Edwards must now lay low, but might not be good enough. Selection of Edwards or someone of his political profile would have drawn white male voters toward Obama.

John McCain

Edwards is reportedly still considering an appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. That would sink Obama’s chances for good. Another featured speaker, Bill Clinton, also has an adulterer’s reputation. So much for the Dems.

Now, all bets are off. John McCain’s camp must be dancing in the streets by now.

This is hardly going to sink Obama's campaign.

Although, I am sure that McCain's camp is dancing a jig. They have never had anything but negativity to use against Obama and this will be another nice juicy nugget for them. But I'm still betting that McCain's negative stance is, in the end, going to hurt him more than it hurts Obama.

As for me and many, many other voters, we don't particularly care who Edwards (or McCain or Obama or Hillary or Bill, etc., etc., ad infinitum) sleeps with. We're not marrying them, we're hiring them to to do a job.

Obama ...

... has peaked too soon, just like Hillary did last year. There's too much time left for the McCain camp to wreak havoc, and Edwards' antics will make things mnuch worse for the Dems. So much for the election. It will be a wrose screwup than Gore in 2000.

McCain needs to be VERY careful how he approaches

all of this...He was STILL married to his first wife when he DUMPED her for his current "younger" woman...he should stay away from throwing stones, lest he get caught in a barrage of stones himself. I think the far right conservatives have seen the end of their Bush heydays and hopefully Americans will vote with their heads and not their "tabloid emotions".

You don't think ...

... Obama doesn't have former girlsfriends who will come back to haunt him?

Man, the hits Hillary takes,...

are you serious? This is as bad as McCain blaming Obama for the oil crisis.

I doubt that Hillary is this stupid.

She craves the attention and the "right" to be the nominee, however even she wont stoop to wrecking the Dems chances...she doesn't want that to be her legacy, or on her somewhat spotty reputation.

We agree, Sassys,...

there isn't a single politician who would really benefit from something like this at this point, even though the story did come out initially, when, was it February? And please, if it had been her, or anyone else prominent, the story wouldn't have gotten buried for as long as it has. Just silly.

Just remember ...

... the Clintons will do anything to win. They crushed any opposition during Bill's eight years, and they know how to play political hardball, and Hillary's followers are dangerous cultists.

Apocalypto's picture

It won't make any difference ...

... who wins, Obama or McCain. The Bush administration has done all the heavy lifting that future administrations will benefit from. It's just like Reagan in the 1980s; Bill Clintpn's eight-year economic growth ride was the end-result of Reaganomics.

Oh my god!

What color is the sky in your world?

The Bush administration has done what? Start a war - with a lie - that is costing the country trillions? Yep. Give all his buddies big contracts to supply that war? Yep. Give tax breaks and unfair advantages to big oil? Yep. Made The United States a country to be scorned by the rest of the world? Yep.

Yeah, they've sure done some heavy lifting, all right.

It's an investment ...

... in a better future for us all. Mark my words: In 10 years' time, the Iraq war will be a blip on the radar screen compared to what is to come. Russia has already invaded Georgia just this week, but they can't sweep south because the US is already there. We would not be so war-ready and war-savvy had it not been for Bush.

The Bush administration, just like Lincoln after the Civil War and Roosevelt after World War II, is taking the war to the enemy. I'd rather go down fighting rather than let the forces of darkness walk all over us while we do nothing.

Pussy Willow's picture

Go down fighting?

I've got news for you, it takes money to fight and the U.S. no longer has any because of Bush's lies and thievery. He's mortgaged the U.S. to the hilt - to China, no less. In 10 years time, if we continue on this same path, China will already have foreclosed.

Apocalypto's picture

You're right ...

... about China owning us. However, the US has no choice but to continue on a war footing. Note the Russians tried to blow up Georgia's oil pipeline. Bush, only today, has pretty much told Putin to back off. Secretary of State Rice today was brutal in her up-front, blunt challenge to the Russians. No matter what the cost, the US must prevail, or the enemy will be at our doorstep.

Pussy Willow's picture

No matter what the cost?

Spoken like a true Rethuglican.

The U.S. is not the world police. Georgia's President may be putting pressure on us to get involved but I'm really not sure that's what we need to be doing. And I'm absolutely positive that we can't afford to get involved because of Bush's insanity in Iraq. As for Condi and her challenge to the Russians - when was the last time Condi did anything that didn't blow up in our faces? Ha!

At least ...

... we haven't had another 9-11 -- yet. Why? Because we're overseas taking the fight to the enemy. If we let up, they'll be on our shores again, just like they were when they destroyed the World Trade Center and partially destroyed the Pentagon. The cost of 9-11 was at least $3 trillion in an attack that wrecked our airline industry, drained more than $1 trillion out of Wall Street's markets, endangered our oil supply and threatened us all -- our kids in schbools, average people just going to work every day, the New York City fire and police departments -- everyone. Do we just sit back and put up with it? I think not.
