Where is my post on "Laying Linoleum--Never Again In This Lifetime"--Seems To Be Gone

ammorton's picture

Ok, so when I posted my last entry "A Jack Of All Trades--I Don't Think So", I had mentioned that I had posted previously about my experience on laying linoleum in my kitchen. I had stated that if you hadn't read it you should because it was pretty funny.
Well, it seems as if it wasn't posted here or it's missing or something. I could have swore that I posted it here as well on Communati.com.
Anyway I am going to re-post it here and there. It is also my MySpace on my blog there. Feel free to check it out.

Ok, what do you get when you take a roll of linoleum, a bucket of adhesive, and two people that have never laid linoleum before? Well, let me tell you what you get. You get two people who got their asses kicked by a roll of linoleum, and a contoured floor.
Here's the short(well I will try to keep it short)story. I came across a 19 foot roll of linoleum at an auction a few weeks back for 12.00 dollars. It was in decent shape, it looks like a wood floor, and compared to what my kitchen floor looked like, anything was better than what I had. No problem, I figured between me and my hubby, we could do this, I mean, how hard can it be to roll it out and tack it down. So we go the the Home Depot and get our adhesive, a couple of tack strips, a trowel to spread the adhesive, and we did have to get some floor leveler to fix a hole that a friends dog had dug into on the old brittle floor.
So we have all our materials, and we are ready to start. I move everything out of the kitchen, and sweep and mop the floor. Let it dry, were good to go. My hubby puts down the adhesive first, because you have to let it get tacky, and that takes up to an hour. Then while we were waiting, of course my hubby had to have some beer, because you know, you cant lay a floor with out beer. So we go get beer, coffee for me because I dont drink.
So then we are trying to make sure which direction we were going to start from. It was at that point that we realized just how much of a bitch this was going to be. We have alot of contours in this kitchen and a 19 foot roll of linoleum. I was afraid to measure and pre-cut it because what if we screwed up something and then we lay it out and it isn't right. So we opted to just start at one end and roll the other direction. That is where the counters came in handy because the roll literally laid on the counter with the help of my daughter holding the end so it wouldn't stick to the adhesive until we were straight. We almost knocked off a shelf on my wall that has alot of glass on it, so while my hubby is holding the heaviest part of the roll and it is kinda resting on the counter and my daughter has the other end, I am putting my shelf back on the wall, meanwhile my flipflops are sticking to the floor adhesive. Note to self:"never wear flipflops when laying linoleum with adhesive". It was a complete and utter mess at that point, trying to get it laid and making sure it is straight.
Long story short, we made a few mistakes along the way, but if you are not a floor person and knew where to look, it would look like a couple of pros did it, yea right.
Despite the fact that both of us were covered in adhesive, that by the way, doesn't come off very easy at all, especially on my my hubbys legs(hair), and the fact that we had to piece a few areas(very small)it really doesn't look to bad for two people that have never done this before and the overall cost was a mere 57.00 dollars.
Will I ever attempt this again? Hell no! I will go with the squares before I ever do the rolled linoleum. It was an experience, but I think if I were to have been standing back watching us, we probably looked something like the three stooges, or Laurel and Hardy or something. I imagine it was funny as hell. _

Ammorton, I swear you had that post on here because

I read it. I don't go to Communati or Myspace, so it had to be here that I read it.

Weird.

I'm still so totally impressed that you did this.
