Where dead tv shows go to die....
Fox is a funny tv network...they get a great show going, and then they can it prematurely...or they sell it off to some other network, like they can't be bothered to actually keep making the episodes, so they auction off the concept ( and the audience) to the highest bidder.
Take Futurama, for example.. after a few seasons, the show went off air, only to be taken over by a cable station.. (I thinkit's cartoon network or comedy central) .. so , finally , new episodes will be released...in 2008?
Another fine example is family guy... the show was cancelled fairly quickly, only to be resurected due to dvd sales.
Finally, there was arrested development, one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.. it only ran for about 3 seasons... and who knows if there will ever be more...
The sad thing is, the shows that fox uses to replace these gems are real stinkers... like their current show about two married couples... blah...
It seems to me that Fox is constantly trying to rekindle the success it experienced with married with children. The 'average dysunctional family' theme seems to be their favorite, yet I think it's wearing a bit thin. Let's see, there was grounded for life, malcom in the middle, bernie mac , titus...well, I can't think of anymore off the top of my head, but you can be sure that there are a handful more...regardless, there is a comon theme involved...

FOX
[Adult Swim] on Cartoon Network didn't make any new episodes of Futurama, but it got exclusive syndication rights to both that and Family Guy, the latter of which actually had a pretty good first run (either 4 or 5 seasons, IIRC). Thanks to [Adult Swim], both of these shows enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, which led to DVD releases, and eventually their rebirth. Family Guy is back on FOX and is actually their highest-rated show now, I believe.
Futurama was picked-up by Comedy Channel, who beat-out [Adult Swim] (who are not pleased) and will be making new episodes. The entire original cast has been rehired.
FOX also treated Married with Children shoddily, moving it around on the schedule, even canceling it without giving the actors notice (there wasn't even a wrap party!). I agree with you that they have had some pretty good ideas that just didn't go anywhere. I tried really hard a few times, but I just didn't get into Arrested Development. G4 (formerly TechTV) picked it up for syndication, but has no plans to make new episodes. In fact, Jeffrey Tambor from that show is in the new FOX show you were discussing. Malcolm in the Middle had a very good run and won several Emmys.
