When I'm Sixty-Four
This Beatles tune has come to represent the idealized life we all dream about having in our twilight years. As that famous year approached for Paul McCartney, I’m sure he envisioned Heather Mills at his side and baby Beatrice on his lap.
Nice dream for a man who’s spent more years married than single. He’s become accustomed to having a constant, supportive companion leading a quiet life with him and his kids. Linda was his rock, his soulmate. We all know this and loved her for the effect she had on the former Beatle’s life.
The comfort zone she created for him made him easy prey for Ms. Mills. She looked like a young Linda McCartney: innocent, wide-eyed, pretty blonde hair. Easy to forget that underneath that pretty veneer was a calculating brain. She had dreams of a music career. How better to achieve those dreams than through a rich, iconic, lonely musician? Cuddle up to get rich and famous. The press shot down those dreams just as she shot down his.
Now Sir Paul is lonely again, seeking refuge on this milestone birthday in a quiet celebration surrounded by his children and sadly lacking the loving companion who would make both this birthday and every birthday to come complete.
I’m sure millions of fans around the world join me in wishing Sir Paul a happy birthday, a loving Father’s Day, and a future with a mate that gives him everything he truly deserves. Happy birthday, Sir Paul.
