What's Cooking, Grandma?

I was listening to "Weekend Woman's Hour" on BBC radio 4 yesterday afternoon. One of the items on the programme was about a new website called "what's Cooking, Grandma?". It was the conception of two young men who were talking one day about how wonderful their grandmas' cooking was and what a shame that old recipes were often lost.

Their first idea was for a website where Grandmas' recipes could be posted in writing. On further discussion they realised that most grandmothers don't weigh things, so how would someone following the recipe know what a handful of this ingredient or a pinch of that meant? So they decided that a site where video film of Grandmothers cooking their recipes was a far better idea.

Apparently in a delicious irony, their first grandma video on the site was "Nanna Webb"! There are around twelve videos on the site at present but the aim is to collect video recipes of Grandmothers all over the World.

What an excellent resource this will be and what a wonderful idea to save Grandma's recipes for future generations.

I still use my Nanna's recipe for Lancashire Hotpot

and can hear her in my head now saying " and no kidneys or mushrooms mind! No matter what fancy recipes tell you, a true Lancashire hotpot has only lamb, carrots, potatoes and stock in it."
