What Is With The Cost Of Milk--Is There A Shortage Of Cows?

Why is milk so high priced lately? What is the deal? Seems as if when I drive around my part of the country, there are several dairy farms and the fields are full of dairy cows, so I am thinking there cant be a shortage of cows, so what is the reason for the price increase in milk?
For the longest milk was around 2.25-2.50 a gallon. Now I am paying 4.35 a gallon for it. Some people are paying 5.00 and just over for it. That is quite an increase. Gasoline and some brands of cigarettes are not this much. If there are any farmers out there, please enlighten those of us who drink the heck out of milk, exactly why it is that it jumped in price so much.

I hear
..that it is because of the fuel prices. The cost of farming is going through the roof, so the cost of milk goes up too. Sucks, really.
Corn is going to fuel
and farmers are having to pay higher for corn to feed livestock. It's the old supply and demand thing.
