What Is That?

There's this strange light stuff that's trying to come through my curtains today. I have no idea what it is, but it seems powerful, as though it's coming from the sky.
Could that be the sun? I've heard of this thing, but, living in central New York, it's such a rare event that it's hard to identify whenever it shows up. Certainly does seem to make things much brighter, reflecting off the snow like that, much brighter than at night, when the lights of the large grocery store whose border I kind of share (there's a swamp in between us) puts off that reflects off both the clouds and the snow (did I happen to mention the snow on the ground "again"?).
Let's see, when is the last time I saw this big yellow thing,... ah yes, it was over two weeks ago. We ARE the second cloudiest city in America after all, and all this alternating between rain and snow kind of gets in the way.
You know, this may mean that one of these nights we may actually see that other big round thing in the sky, and those little twinkling lights also. Been a long while since we've seen those things; what are they called again?

"Here comes the sun - do-do-doo-do..."
It's amazing what a dose of sunshine can do for your spirits, isn't it? We've had alot of grey weather lately, too. This weekend I got to see the sun for the first time in several days and I was awed at how pretty my yard is. As for the moon and the stars - well, I can't say I've been out much to notice them. With my schedule lately, I've been going to bed with the chickens.
That's too bad, PW,...
Around here, when there are stars out, it's a miracle evening. Do you know that the last 13 years in a row it's been cloudy on the day that the Leonid meteor showers have come, so in our area we always miss them? Man, that's just a shame.

Same here, Catfish. And I have been royally pissed
over it!! This is Texas for gosh sakes, we're supposed to have clear skies. But I've missed them for the last 3 or 4 years, at least. I also missed the comets - can't remember the name of that new one.
I don't remember the name either,...
probably because we can't see it. When Haley's came the last time, we had a cloudy day once again. Now, I know where I could go to see these things, but I'm not about driving 35 minutes north at night, then putting myself in a place where I wouldn't feel secure, if you know what I mean.
Actually, that makes no sense at all. I could drive up north to the shores of Lake Ontario, where it's usually much clearer than here (no real idea why, since it is a great lake and all), but since I'm not a student I'd have to go to a place where it'd pure darkness, and, well, I don't like my dark THAT dark, especially if I'm alone (because there's no way in the world I'd get my wife out at that time of night, or in that location).

That's why I don't drive anywhere, either, Catfish.
There's no place I'd feel comfortable in the dark all by myself - no one else around here is that much into watching those things. Plus, I would have had to drive alot further than 35 miles - probably more than 100, to find clear skies.
Isn't that a shame, PW,...
that we each live in places that, because of different circumstances, don't allow us to enjoy the night skies?
However, I wouldn't trade my little bit of light for total darkness ever!

Me, neither, Catfish.
I once lived in an area that had consistently clear skies - I lived in the country so I didn't have to worry about city lights interferring with the night skies. But I hated the area - it was very small, the people were very closed-minded, there were no jobs, etc. I don't really like Dallas but it's 100% better than that other place. I'll put up with the clouds.
I did it once in my life also, PW,...
went to visit a friend back in the early 80's whose family had moved into the country. I stayed up all night because it was totally dark, and I kept hearing noises. Man, that scared me; the unknown will do that. Said I'd never do that again, and I haven't. That may be why the movie Signs bothered me so much; I'd have never been in that house overnight to begin with. That is, unless there was snow all around. Something comforting about snow.

Ah, you and my mother feel the same way, Catfish.
Actually, I enjoyed being out in the country. Heck, I hardly ever even bothered closing the curtains at night. But, of course, I had a dog and plenty of guniea hens around to warn me if there was anything (or anybody) strange around. Now that I live in town, I won't even sleep with the windows open in nice weather. Too many weirdos around at all times of the day.
You know, there is something very comforting about snow. The night is so much brighter with a blanket of snow - the world even sounds softer somehow.
Yes, exactly,...
my wife doesn't see it, but when it's lightly snowing I feel like I'm in my house safe, knowing that there's less crime in the winter and especially in inclement weather, and all those animals tend to hunker down and stay where they stay.
