What is "Skin Ageing"?

pinakigoswami's picture

What is it?

Skin is the largest organ in the body and the most exposed at that.Environmental pollution, harsh sunlight and air-conditioners(sapping up moisture) enhance its ageing process.Stress, coupled with negative emotions, too plays as a catalyst in skin ageing. As you age, muscle contractions and rest lines develop into irritable lines, which are known as wrinkles. There are also freckles and sun spots that speed up the ageing process.

Who gets it earlier?

Melanin, which is a pigment in your skin, protects it from scorching heat.So,fair-skinned(less melanin) people are more susceptible to damage from exposure to excessive UV rays.People who have a family history of skin allergy and pigmentation, and those who develop these early in life, should take extra care of their skin.

How to prevent it?

From age 35-40 onwards, reduce high impact aerobic exercises that involve a lot of jumping.
Everybody should apply sunscreen.Even when you are in the car,the UV rays responsible for ageing can easily penetrate through the glass.Use sunscreen and, depending on your skin type,a moisturiser as well,15-20 minnutes before leaving home.If your job entails field work, you must apply sunscreen every two-three hours and the SPF(Sun Protection Factor) should be about 30.The others should use a sunscreen lotion which has between 15 and 25 SPF.And make sure it also includes a UVA Block.
Everyone, including children, should wear hats with wide brims to protect from UV rays.
Eat coloured fruits and vegetables at least three times a week.Any colour has anti-oxidant properties. It delays ageing, hence less wrinkles are formed.Eat sprouts at least twice a week.It is fine even if it is lightly cooked.Always opt for a balanced diet.
Drink lots of water(at least 6-8 glasses in a day). Not only does it keep your body hydrated, but also acts as a great detoxifier.
Daily exercise, indulging in some regular hobbies or relaxation techniques and good sleep are some other essentials to maintain good, healthy skin even in your twilight years.
