What is more weird - the fact that I have a live, wild gecko currently living in my kitchen or the fact that the only reason I care is because I'm afraid my cat will eat him?

Allow me to suggest a third option. I think it's weirdest that you didn't mention the dogs as a possible gecko attacker. Heehee!

So far...
The dogs haven't noticed Mr. Gecko, and he's hanging out high on the walls so he's safe from them, but not from the great climbing cat.
I have to say that it is quite surprising to go into the kitchen, turn the light on, and have a gecko streak across the wall.
