What is India as a nation going to gain from Shashi Tharoor’s candidature?
India is supporting the candidature of Shashi Tharoor for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Certain Indian newspapers and news channels have started reporting about Shashi Tharoor’s native village and his relatives. There will be a steady flow of reports in the coming months and we will get stories of all kind published and aired.
What is India as a nation going to get from Shashi Tharoor’s candidature? Absolutely nothing! As a secretary general he is not going to be of any use to India. May be the Indian media will celebrate it like the first human landing on the moon. The celebrations will last till another BREAKING NEWS. His victory will also boost the pride of Indian NRIs or say of the global Indians. But certainly not the pride of millions of Indian NRIs toiling and living in the sub-humanitarian conditions in the Gulf and elsewhere.
India is vying for a permanent membership in the United Nations. There has been an intense lobbying for this by the previous NDA government and the present UPA government. Shashi Tharoor’s candidature is going to put this into jeopardy. If ever he gets elected, India can give up the dream of a permanent membership.
The loss Shashi Tharoor’s candidature is going to create is manifold. Not only is India going to lose its chance of gaining a permanent membership but India will find it hard to defend itself in many of the contentious issues including Jammu and Kashmir. A secretary general of Indian origin will always be accused of being partial and India will have to face numerous embarrassing moments.
India losing a permanent member status in United Nations is going to be a blow for several third world countries and developing countries.
