What I Think About the Google Ads on My Blog

Submitted by gracepub on March 10, 2007 - 12:37am.

I've had several people ask me about the Google ads on my site, do I approve of them. For the most part - yes.

That is, I feel they are a safe bet for people who follow my blog. If you follow my blog, then you've read about avoiding surveys. Of course, signing up for Google AdSense is a good idea.

Over the last year I have tried out a few different 'pay per click' venues. Some did pay better, but they were down so often that it wasn't worth it.

Paid Surveys
I devoted about 200 hours to checking out the surveys. Yes, there are some people who make money off these, but these people would make more money investing their time into blogging.

Writing Up
Do I think that John was right? Well, I think his calculations were off by about six months. Now, that doesn't mean he was wrong - it just means that the average 'dedicated' person will not be able to meet the criteria for his projection.

Now, on the other side, I am tired of reading blogs that are against John. One trip to the 'hall of fame' shows that only 3 bloggers have tried to post as many posts as he said. No bloggers have been as pure as he advised us to be. And, well - we have just failed.

Now, that said - can us 'failed' bloggers meet John's projection? Based on my experience - yes. And, I am going to start a blog and keep it pure and work toward proving that John knows what he is talking about.

Helium Knowledge
This ad shows up fairly often in my blogs. Yes, for the time invested, the pay is good. I made $100 from them last year for about 200 posts - or, about $5 an hour.

Now, this may not seem like a big deal, but I use helium for my 'breaks.' When I've had enough of a coding problem that won't work - or I've been chatting with 5 people for 5 hours, totalling about 20 problems solved and my nerves are strung out - I go to Helium to play. So, in fact, I am getting $5 an hour to play.

Now - Helium lets me benefit from referrals. So, if you want to sign up, please send me a private message through writingup and I'll send you an invite within a day. Then, you'll be one of my fav people of the day.

My Take on Online Surveys
I already gave My Take on Online Surveys. They are a great way for someone to pass the time, more profitable than playing runescape or showdog.com, but they are not a viable method of earning money.

Freelance Writing
This is a great way to earn a good income. However, I tell people to invest six months writing, for five hours every day, learn all you can about web writing, and taking small projects. This is the only way to make a name for yourself and earn more than .01 a word.

Paid to Blog,
There are several 'paid to blog' clicks. I have more than 20 blogs, five of them are sustained for the sole purpose of posting advertising and supporting my other blogs. I do not see this as spam, because my stats show that these blogs have return readers, receive lots of hits where people have read more than 10 posts, and generate click throughs. However, I am selective on the blogs I choose.

Online Teaching
If you are online daily, have something to teach, and a good rapport with people, online teaching may be a great way to earn extra money. However, people do not just 'click into' a school and then buy a course. This type of venue needs as much promotion as book selling.

Getting Started
One of the best ways to get started is by joining a portal and working for them, learning the ropes, and establishing a reputation as a professional.

There are several good portals and 'get started' sites:

www.inspiredauthor.com
www.lovetolearn.com
www.suite101.com
www.ideamarketers.com
www.bellaonline.com
www.dabblingmum.com

I won't talk more on this because I posted this earlier.

Content Management Systems
People are always looking for information. Websites that bring the information from around the web, in an organized manner, are 'major' Google income earners.

However, you won't earn any money in the first year...why? Because it will take you that long to learn everything you are doing wrong, and that you 'don't know' enough about SEO, so you break down and take a SEO marketing course - then you'll start making money.

Hope that is enough to give you a good start in 2007. Sorry there are no 'be lazy for pay' or 'don't do anything and we'll make you rich' schemes on my list.
