What Does 'Support the Troops' Mean?

'support the troops' | terrorism | war on terrorism

We have all heard the various phrases and cliches over the past five years. "You are either with us, or against us" and "you can't support the troops if you don't support the war". Are these mere platitudes with a bias, slant, and spin, or must they become a reality that is supported by consensus?

I do not support the war. Once it took the turns it did by moving into Iraq, with all the deceit and gesturing, I lost any energy to invest in 'supporting' Bush and his agenda.

Yet, I feel I do support the troops. They are as much victims of a misguided and treacherous program as are the dead civilians who once lived in Iraq.

I feel extremely bad for the troops, and have unlimited emotional support for them. I wish there was something I could do for them, yet in the current political landscape, that something eludes me.

HOW DO YOU SUPPORT THE TROOPS?

Supporting the troops

I have always wondered what people mean with their bumper stickers "Support Our Troops.” too. In all likelihood they are calling or writing their representatives in Congress to tell them how inadequate our troops’ families live back home. Or maybe they line up in our cities streets to demonstrate how improper our soldiers are treated in their VA hospitals. Well, I may be wrong but I think all those people and their stickers get together every weekend to raise funds for our troops’ children entertainment and education. But as soon as I think how realistic that is, then a new thought comes to my head and I change my mind. They are not longer doing any of those things I mentioned before. What I think is that they support our troops by calling our president and to tell him to get our troops out of Iraq, Afghanistan and every country our troops have not business being there. And that makes feel real good because that’s truly supporting our troops. Bring our boys and girls back home!!

Troop support...

certainly does not seem to be leaving them there for an ill-defined "war" and sending them home to ill-prepared rehab.

It's time to end this war.

It's time to end this war. My cousin is in Iraq he is only 19 and has killed people for a president he didn't vote for...Makes me wonder what president Bush was doing when he was 19 "other then dodging the draft".

Cousin is killing...

When you put it that way, so starkly, it just makes the whole botched affair even crazier. I hope your cousin will be ok.

Good Post and Comments. To support the troops means to "get them out and bring them home!"

At least 3,274 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003

It's just horrible how many

It's just horrible how many people have died.

I don't believe things will ever get better over there. They are never going to stop.

As americans, we are going to have to be more on guard. They hate Americans over there.

The landscape has changed...

and it seems the ugly American may be taking on a whole new light. Or, is it so new?
