What Does Big Brother See When He Looks At You?
How secure is "internet security"? I am talking about the kind of security or insecurity that might allow the government access to our files...email files, search files, and yes, even our blogging files.
The debate is heating up, and Google seems to have taken a stand...for now. But what happens next, and when...and how will it end?
Let's say, for instance, that you type in "Cuban cigars" or "tax shelter" or "getting out of a traffic ticket." Or, what about some of the unsavory comments that we read on here about the government and the President? There is a government agency somewhere that is interested in these things...to be sure.
So, what about it? Have we come to a place in this country where we need to be fearful about what we say or write? Would Big Brother come after us? Will Microsoftl come up with a Big Brother filter? Let me hear from you. What's mroe important...privacy or national security?

I think there can be a good
I think there can be a good balance between the two. With people being held in Guantanamo because they wore a Casio watch (favored by suicide bombers) should I be worried about saying how much I dislike the actions of the President? Well, hard to say. Should I be worried? Probably. They are holding people indefinitely for less than my words of disagreement. Am I worried? Worry isn't the right word for it. I simply want to be able to use my first amendment rights to disagree with policy without having to get to the airport 10 hours before my flight.
I do NOT think that the government has any business knowing what people are searching for. So what if I type in "suicide bombers" into google? That doesn't mean I am supporting them or trying to find out some kind of nefarious info. More often, it would mean I'm a high school or college level kid who has been assigned a report for school.
One more thing, and this is my main argument against Bush's reasoning that he didn't need a warrant for wiretaps and that it threatens national security. What happens if you are speeding and you drive by a co in a standard black and white cop car? You slow down, right? What happens if terrorists know the phones are tapped? They leave the phones. For a while at least, you have thrown them off-guard in order to find a new way to communicate. All you do by trying to keep it hush-hush is turn your constituents paranoid.

It seems like many of our laws end up hurting the law abiding citizen more than the outlaws. As you say, they just find another way of doing business.
