What Do You See When You See A Homeless Person?

alone | Ben Orr | Food | homeless | ill | Lost

Most of us have never had to go without a meal nor have we had no place to sleep. We feel that it is our "right" to have food,a home,a bed.We take it for granted that we have a family, small or large, that cares for us.Everyone has these things.Right? Wrong. When you see a homeless person you probablt cringe, and even if you don't say it you are thinking "what a loser".Right? Be honest,at least to yourself if not to others.Do you have ant compassion for the person you see?None of us wants to think about being alone, lost, mentally ill or addicted to alcohol or drugs. We are to above it all.The sad truth of the matter is,none of us is above being alone.I was homeless for 7yrs.partly due to an addiction and partly because I wanted to be homeless.Who chooses to be homeless? You would be surprized to learn just how many people want to be "invisable".I was one of those people.I cut my ties to all my friends and family,it was easier to just disappear. And it is easy.I managed to keep myself safe, and fed.It was'nt always easy, but I did it.Being a woman on the streets is not easy but if you learn how to carry yourself and who and who not to talk to,then it's a little easier.I can say that I had alot of strange adventures in those 7yrs.Over the next few weeks I'll give you some insight into being truly homeless and alone.

Homeless Post

Just thought I would write and tell you that my wife and I are involved in a homeless shelter here in Athens, Ohio The organization is known as Good Works (http://good-works.net) I volunteer for one or two evenings a week and my wife is the house supervisor there. Check out the website and let me know what you think of it. I was homeless in Los Angeles in 1973 for about 3 weeks and that was enough for me. I couldn't imagine 7 years. But as a result of being an intern at the shelter for a year and the volunteer work I do, I think I am beginning to comprehend it. Also, we have done such things as the staff doing what was called "fast from shelter" which is spending one night out on the street downtown to help us never to lose touch with the reality of the problem. It isn't always the fault of the person who is homeless. Those that say it is their fault, are just looking for a reason to ignore the problem hoping it will go away. God bless and thanks for addressing the issue.
