What Are Your Writing Goals?

goals | writer | writing

Do you have your goals written down?

(This can apply to anything in life that you want to accomplish, but since I am a writer, I will address writing specifically here.)

This seems pretty simple, but I know very few writers who actually have their goals written down. Let alone those who are actually working to achieve them.

If you want to go somewhere with your writing, do you know where you are going?
Have you written down your long-term goal(s)? How about short- or mid-term goals?

If you don't set and achieve small, measured goals, you most likely will waste weeks, months, even years floundering with not much (or nothing!) to show for it.

Here's an example of setting some short-term goals:
1. I will write (insert number here - 250, 300, 500, whatever is do-able for you) words per day.
2. I will write one article of at least 800 words in length per week.
3. I will submit four articles a month.
4. I will write two chapters and an outline for a novel by the end of the month.
etc.

Even better, find someone to hold you to these goals - a friend, family member, writing group, writing buddy, etc. By telling someone else and committing to your goals, you have an extra motivation to stick to it. And once you reach those goals, set new ones.

When you look back on all you have accomplished one month, six months, or one year from now, you'll be glad you did!

great advice...

for me the hardest part is telling other people about my goals. i guess it's that fear of failure... and as long as i'm the only one who knows what my goals are... i won't disappoint anyone, or risk embarassing myself ... but definitely something to consider...thanks :)

I know what you mean

But telling other people is sometimes the most important part. It's easy for you to ignore your goals if you really want to, but someone else will help hold you accountable.

I used to feel this way and wouldn't even tell people I wanted to write - no one in my own family even knew. But I am so much more disappointed in myself when I don't try at all, that I finally realized trying and failing means at least I'm DOING something.

If you want to, post your goals here - you can't be too embarrassed, because I don't even know your real name - but I CAN check back with you and help hold you accountable.

How 'bout it? Anyone else want to start a writing accountability group?

Great suggestion...

I think I just might do that -- as soon as I come up with what my writing goals are. :) It would be great if other people got involed too!

Accountability is good...

When nobody knows you tried, nobody knows if you fail. That was my philosophy for a few years. I've improved. Thirty is approaching in a few years and I don't think I'm going to accomplish all the things I intended to. I definitely need to shape up. A group would be great because, quite frankly, if you tell a friend or family member that isn't a writer, they might forget or they'll accept your excuses. At least that's the way it is for me.

The worst thing for me...

...is when I think of all the time I've wasted being afraid to try. The older I get, the more I realize how precious time is! (Not that I'm THAT old yet, but we never know how much time we really have, and I don't want to die having never accomplished anything I really wanted to do!)

So...
post your goals here!

I will check on them weekly. I will ask you how you are doing. And I will be nice but not ignored. :) (Okay, I'll ask you, but I promise I won't be obnoxious - don't have time for that anyway.)

So here are my goals for this week:
1. Finish my current ID project - due Sunday - and get a good night's sleep (at least 8 hours).
2. Start conceptualizing book project, starting with brainstorming session tomorrow.
3. Start writing one chapter - at least 1000 words, even if it's all wrong and I have to start over.

So... by this time next week, 3/25/06, I'll check back here and let you know if I've accomplished these goals.

Weekly writing goals...

Weekly goals are a good idea and very manageable, especially since I'm still working full time. I'll start simple.

Writing Goals for the week 3/19/06 to 3/25/06:

1. I have a list of 6 article topics that I would like to cover in the next few weeks. I'd like to finish one article this week and get a good start on a second one.
2. Get some notes down for one of the novels I'm working on.
3. Finish reading the book for review.

We'll see how this works.

Good for you, gom jabbar!

Yay for you, you've taken the first step - getting those goals written down.

I'll come back and check on 3/25. :)

One note - I have found it helpful to write my goals in stronger language to hold myself more accountable - like instead of "I'd like to finish one article", say "I will finish one article..."

Or better yet, some people prefer to write goals this way:
By 3/25/06:
1. I have finished one article and written a first draft of the second one.
2. I have written 1-2 pages of notes for my novel.
3. I have finished reading the book for review.

Stating it as if you have already accomplished the goals helps you visualize already having it done (and how great you will feel when you accomplish it).

Gom jabbar, myspaceoryours, others - GOALS?

I've even given you an extra day - so, how are you doing on your goals? Have you met them? Exceeded them?

What are your new goals for the next week? Even if you don't share them here, make sure you are writing them down AND looking at them daily - post-it notes are a great way to keep them up where you can see them.

This is a great idea!

The work I have deadlines for, I'm right on top of getting that stuff done. But everything else, like sending out queries or doing articles that can be submitted "whenever," that stuff's just not getting done! So I'd like to jump in for next week. By Sunday, April 2nd, I'm going to complete a project I've had in the works for Performance Sighthound Journal. I'm also going to send out at least one response to an ad/query for new work. This is in addition to meeting all my April 1 deadlines, which I always do.

Thanks!
