What about the starving children in our own backyard?

Jhaynes26's picture

I had to say something on this issue. I am sick of seeing those save the children commercials. Not because I am insensitive to the children in those countries, but because there are children starving right here in the USA! This is the cold truth and no one ever seems to want to address this. People like to sweep this under the rug. They would rather have a dozen commercials on t.v. in our country to save children in another country. How about putting some commercials on about the kids that are here. The children that eat out of the garbage cans, the children that sleep on trains, in bathrooms of subways and restaurants, or the children that end up in the system just to starve some more. This situation is so serious. And people make such a big deal about such trivial things in this country. I just wish that we could take care of home first before we go off to another country trying to make it better.

You are so Right!!!! Charity starts at home!

We listen to our government leaders promote aid to every country on the map and yet you can go to any city in the USA and find entire families living in squalor on the streets and in the alleys. We are donating money for AIDS to countries all over the world and yet we have AIDS patients right here in every city in America that are not taking AIDS drugs because they don't have insurance which makes having access to those drugs totally impossible. Where is the humanity in allowing our own to die in the streets?

We claim to be one of the richest countrys

in the world and yet our poor get poorer and our filthy rich get richer...it is indeed a crying shame. And it will get worse before it gets better. Corruption breeds contempt and more corruption. The only people that give freely in this country are the poor! This is why the rich are rich, they rarely part with their money.

impediments to trying to take care of the poor. We pay farmers to destroy food. We fine those who try to feed the homeless unless they're in some kind of shelter. Though I'm not religious, I do remember something in the Bible that said there will always be poor; but it doesn't mean they have to be hungry.

One must ask why the

Sire's picture

One must ask why the children are on the streets in the first place. Is it because they are running from abusive parents or is it because they do not want to live under 'strict rules'?

There may well be many reasons. If you can solve these you may well have less kids on the streets.

This ties into what I said

Jhaynes26's picture

This ties into what I said that it is this country! There are so many problems here in this country alone and then they have the audacity to go to someone else's country to try to make it like our own. As If!
They act as if we are actually living the "American Dream". You know that is a total lie when there are so many abused, homeless, and starving children. When will it end!

Jhaynes26 – April 29, 2008 – 5:23pm

Let's clarify, Sire,...

Catfish's picture

when we talk about children in the streets here, we're not talking about the same thing as what we hear goes on in Brazil. That wouldn't be allowed to happen here. However, there are hungry children, and they're hungry because their families are hungry.

Now, what does happen here is that parents get depressed and feel trodden on, and they stop parenting. That's when children get out and cause trouble during the day, oftentimes joining gangs of some sort. But that's kind of a trickle down effect of poverty; it doesn't happen in wealthier neighborhoods, unless kids are trying to copycat the real thing.

I have to disagree with you

Jhaynes26's picture

I have to disagree with you there, because there are abused children in those wealthy neighborhoods and then they wind up in the system. And there are plenty of abused and exploited childrem HERE! That was the whole point of this thread. People always look and say that if it's not so bad as another countries situation then it's not that bad. That is false. We need to take care of our children. I know I may sound corny saying this, but the children are our future. Poor and rich kids all have problems. The rich kids are usually the ones that are so messed up that they grow up to be adults that hurt kids. So don't you think we need to help kids both rich and poor if they are in need.

That makes sense. There must

Sire's picture

That makes sense. There must be a way around it. Just giving them money won't solve the problem either. There has to be a way that they can earn the money through some sort of effort of their own so that they have self worth. I hope that made sense.

just giving money hasn't helped, though the money is needed. I've always liked the concept of work programs, and not just menial work, but for whatever reason most communities never quite get it done.
