I don't know how I feel about this. Certainly he should have paid his taxes, but there are a lot of people that think there's a way to get around taxes. They specifically stated that they went after him for the maximum sentence because he's a celebrity. And in the same way I don't like celebrities getting off charges because of their fame, I also don't like them being persecuted and prosecuted for it.

I realize that's somewhat naive, and nearly impossible to ignore their fame. I'm just saying that in an ideal world, they wouldn't need to go after stars to make an example of them, because their fame wouldn't count for much of anything anyway.

Yes, he should. But he didn't. One of his co-defendants, the man that told Snipes he could avoid paying taxes, has 4000 other "clients" he advised, and the vast majority of these people are still free. Also, the article below says that criminal tax prosecutions are rare. I know that this is a fact. A few years ago, I had a friend that got in trouble with the IRS for back taxes. He was not prosecuted. Instead, they usually try to dock your wages. I am saying exactly the same thing as you are. He SHOULD definitely get the same sentence as anyone else. The problem is, anyone else wouldn't have gotten this sentence.

I heard a report that he wasn't just prosecuted for the last couple years of not filing his taxes, but also because they looked at his records over the last 8 years and found many discrepancies and returns in which he claimed he was owed millions of dollars in taxes. That's nearly a decade of tax fraud! Maybe 3 years is a bit harsh since his accountant handled everything, but he can't get off with just a slap on the wrist either. He should be semi-involved in his own finances, too. You don't hire a gardener and wait 8 years before noticing the grass is dead.

That depends if the gardener is giving you anything on the side?

the brightest bulb on the planet, though I like him as an actor. The thing is that no one in America gets away with not paying taxes, though some are at least given a chance at paying them. No one has gone to trial over this particular argument and won, and there have been some bigger fish than Snipes. Remember, Willie Nelson and Leona Helmsley (billionaire) both went to prison for it.

He had his chance to make amends and decided to go to court instead; heck, he even found his own way to delay it by working on a movie out of the country from where he couldn't be extradited from; that was like thumbing it in the noses of these guys. No wonder they went after him like they did.

Still, I think 3 years is a bit much, though I guess that's the law, and he didn't even try to pay for 3 years. Proves money is more important than other things, though, because look how fast they took him to trial for taxes, yet R Kelly still hasn't gone to trial for possibly having sex with an underaged girl and, well, other nasty stuff he did.
