Weird Dream

I had a weird dream last night. I'm usually pretty good at picking it apart and figuring out what they mean, even while I'm still having the dream. But this one has me completely stumped.

I was on a school bus with a bunch of other adults. It was a typical yellow school bus, so I thought it was strange that there were no kids. All of the adults on there had some belongings with them and were dressed in multiple layers, as if they were fleeing from something. There was this *thing* leading the bus. It was sort of humanoid, but it wasn't human. It had yellow fur, about 2 inches long, and it was covered in that from head to toe. Except on its face. It was a little shorter fur there. It's face was supposed to be kind looking, as if it was a Sesame Street monster, but it wasn't kind. One look at it, and you could tell that it was not going to mess around.

It stood up at the front while all the adults were cowering in their seats. It started to tell us that we were about to leave, but he expected the rules to be followed. Then, he said a few rules. After he finished, he said, "So, if you break any of the rules, there will be consequences. Like this..." and at that point, an enormous black hand shot out of a dark space at the front of the bus. It's like the front of the bus disappeared and was replaced with this big, black emptiness. The arm was about a foot in diameter, and the hand even bigger, and it's like it was made of smoke, or something intangible. It was lightning fast, and it grabbed someone out of their seat and pulled them back into the darkness before the person even had a chance to scream. Just to get his point across, the yellow guy pointed at a few more people, and each time he did, the hand came out of the darkness, grabbed them, and pulled them back in.

As we started to leave, the yellow thing sat down next to someone in the seat behind me. I made sure not to turn around and look at it. As the bus left, everyone started singing a loud, raucous song. I was worried that the yellow thing would be pissed, so I made sure to turn around. I wanted to catch its attention so it knew that I was not one of the people singing, but it never looked at me. Instead, he turned his head from person to person, trying to figure out who started it. The bus stopped and he jumped up, demanding to know who started singing. His eyes focused on me, and said, "You did it." I shook my head and tried to convince him that I did not sing at all, let alone start it, but he seemed unconvinced. He finally was convinced enough, because he didn't send the hand out after me, but he did move me to a different seat.

I sat down and kept facing forward, not wanting to do anything that might upset him. And that's when my cell phone went off. It had fallen out of my purse when I was back in the last seat. He handed it to me and looked livid, as if that was somehow proof that I started the singing. I didn't know what I could possibly do to convince him that singing has nothing to do with a phone ringing, but he motioned for me to answer it, so I did.

On the other line was a woman telling me about a contest I entered. Now, this happened in real life. I won a contest, but so far, nobody has contacted me about the prize. They called and told me that I was disqualified because the CEO didn't like my video. I told them that was unfortunate, but according to their rules, I won. If they wanted the CEO to pick, they should have written the rules that way, and that I was going to place a call the their state's attorney general, and provide them evidence that shows they are running a rigged contest. They told me I didn't have any proof, and I told them I did. (In fact, in real life, I've taken screenshots, just to prove it in case something like this did happen.) The whole time, the yellow guy was watching me. It's like he was trying to figure out whether I was better than the people on the bus because I wasn't backing down from confrontation, or whether I was going to be a trouble-maker, and it was better to send the hand to get me. In the end, I must have passed whatever test was going through his mind, because he allowed me to continue riding.

Now, I almost never have nightmares, and while I guess you could call this one, I didn't really feel afraid at any point. I mean, I wanted him to believe me, but if a 10' long smoke hand is going to snatch me out of my seat, what the hell can I do to stop it? And if I can't stop it, why get worked up about it? So, there wasn't really fear exactly. But I really don't know what this dream means. I'm not feeling especially persecuted by anything. I'm not feeling like I need to convince somebody of something important. I don't really feel like there's anyone in my life that's in control over me, to the point of seeing them as a monster. And I don't feel like I'm being grabbed by intangible forces that are bigger than I am. So I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. It felt like there's something I'm supposed to figure out, because it wasn't just a throwaway dream, but I have no clue what that could be.

Wow

I've been having all sorts of wierd dreams, though the ones (yes, more than one) last night are the only that I remember any of and they're quickly fading away!

This IS weird, and forgive me, but it also seems weird for YOU. Now, what the bus says to me is something to do with travel. Sure, that it's a school bus is odd, but that could simply be because of your kids. A school bus (or schools in general) are more on your mind on a daily bases than any other type of group transport. And, though you mention that the others may be fleeing something - do you think the layers of clothes could really be to do with the distance traveled?

Now, is it at all possible that you feel that you may be becoming more like other people than you'd like? Er, are you suddenly being embraced by the soccer moms??? I mean, you know all too well how often it is that we portray every character in our dreams. That they're parts of our personality coming to life. So, thinking along those lines, if you've felt at all like your life has become mundane or is beginning to be mundane, you very well could be judging that. The hand of judgment is something we've heard about for centuries. So, it wouldn't really be all that shocking if you were putting yourself up for judgment if you felt that maybe you were "betraying" your own set of life rules.

I mean, this probably is totally off base. But, if you've anytime recently, say, stood at the sink and thought - "Wow, this isn't were I thought I'd be now" - that could seep into your subconcious and create a monster (let's face it, you've seen enough of Seaseme Street to create that sort of monster) as well as punishment. And, even though it might have been a totally harmless thought, it could still become much bigger in your dreams.

Soooooo, in conclusion, IF I'm not totally off base about the above, it would seem that you put yourself under scrutiny, decided that you're really not a "traitor" to yourself, but that you still have a ways to go before being the person you want to be or acheived the goals you'd set for yourself?

Hmmm.

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

Honestly, my first thought was that it didn't sound at all like me. But the more I think about it, you just might be onto something. I've kind of embraced a more domesticated-housewife sort of role recently, but I actually enjoy it. So that's why I initially thought your analysis didn't fit. But then I realized, "Good god! A year ago, if you told me I'd be doing all of this, I'd call you nuts!" Am I judging myself? I don't think so. But it is possible that I'm feeling like I've been grabbed and dragged into something out of the blue. Is it sinister? I don't think so, but great big unseen forces have a way of seeming that way when they grab you without warning.

What I liked, IG

spookyyank's picture
spookyyank Says:

And what also seems very much you, is that each time, the monster decided that you were ok and not someone who needed to be dragged off into the abyss. That's what really made my mind go off in that direction. Becuase no matter what your choices are, you've always been pretty damn happy with them. So, even in your dreams where you may question it, you still come back with - "Uh, ya know, this isn't a bad thing". And, that you said you've recently "embraced a more domesticated-housewife sort of role" means that you have thought about it on some level. That younger, wilder side of you may have been questioning it, but in the end you are happy enough with this stage to feel there's no reason for "punishment". So ya, for you, this is a weird dream since you rarely question the choices you make. I also think that's the reason that, while anyone else would have had this nightmare and been terrified - YOU weren't! No matter what tiny part of you may have been asking what you were doing, the bigger part was confident that this newest stage is the right one.

Oh, and I'd been wondering about that contest and if you'd won. Good on you! Let me know (PM) what you win! I anticipate being off line completely in the next few days. Actually, the only reason I've been back here at all the last two days is that my moving plans are nearly set and there's less to do! LOL

IntricateGirl Says:

Yeah. I agree with your assessment.

Well, the contest isn't official yet. Nobody has called me, emailed me, or written me about it, and it ended on Feb. 29. So, I wondering what's taking so long. If they follow the rules though, I'm in the number one spot, so that means I win. Right?? lol

Good luck on the move. Having just gone through one (come to think of it, it's not over yet), I wouldn't wish them on ANYONE!!!

Hmmmmm....you're going on a trip.

Pussy Willow's picture
Pussy Willow Says:

Not too long of a trip but not a short one either. Probably not a real trip, just a metaphorical trip - like a mental journey. It will be a learning experience. You won't be the only one going on this trip but the people in your group will be working, not necessarily against you, but definitely in their own interests; whether their actions cause harm to you or not, so be vigilant. The people in charge of your learning experience will not give you any leeway - it'll be a "their way or the highway" kind of deal. You'll probably spend the intial part of your experience confused and wondering how you got into this mess. If I had had this dream I'd look at my life very carefully and try to figure out if there is anything I'm currently doing that is liable to blow up in my face or, at the very least, go sour enough to create some fairly serious problems - then I'd look at some options to see if I can avoid those problems.

Or......you should contact Stephen King immediately and see if he's interested in collaborating on a book. Honestly, this would make a fantastic SK book.

Or......you should never eat nachos after 9PM.

Cool idea!

I have no idea about what the dream means. I suck at dream interpretation. But at least you weren't scared, that's good.

LOL! It's funny that PW

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

LOL! It's funny that PW brings up Stephen King. To me, his best stories are not the ones where there is some oogey-boogey monster hiding around the corner, or a haunted hotel that wants to eat its guests. Right now, all the great monsters could come skipping into my living room to haul me off, and there's nothing I can do about it. These are other-worldly beings, and if they've decided to get me, there's not much I can do to stop them. But the stories where I think Stephen King is really at his best are the ones that could happen. Where there's some sick psychopath around the corner, rather than a tentacled beast. Because then, there is a very real chance I could do something to save myself and my family, but failing to do it hurts a lot more.

March 20, 2008 - 11:30am

I agree, IG. I prefer the King stories about

You

IntricateGirl Says:

Must, must, MUST read "The Gingerbread Girl" by King. It appeared in either the June, July, or August edition of Esquire magazine, and it's his finest story ever. It transcends being a Stephen King story, and that says a lot.

BTW, I like a good monster too, but I don't know that I'm really scared by them.

March 20, 2008 - 11:55am

Tried to find it, IG

spookyyank's picture
spookyyank Says:

The only place I found 'The Gingerbread Girl' was on Amazon as a book on tape. And, there seems to be no plans to have it published elsewhere. Even Esquire isn't making it easy to get an old copy! When we're settled in the new place I'll look into it again. Hopefully, by then they'll have that issue available to order.

Also, check your library for the July 2007 Esquire. Libraries always have that kind of thing. Possibly they can even get it from another library.

Edited to add: in searching for it, a lot of people didn't care for it. F*ck 'em. One librarian complained that it didn't have a "wow ending". Is this seriously what our literature has been reduced to??

March 24, 2008 - 9:18am

I suck at searches!

spookyyank's picture
spookyyank Says:

Ok, awesome! I'll check it out right away. No "wow" ending?? From a librarian??? If it hadn't been for that librarian who asked me if 'The Boys From Brazil' was a NEW book and had also never heard of Ira Levin, I'd be shocked by that! But, I guess that same disappointed librarian was also disappointed by 'Catcher in the Rye', huh?

I guess they expected

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

I guess they expected something more showy from Stephen King. But yeah, I was kind of disgusted that a librarian (of all people) would want a great big finale. I mean, you've got to wonder what her perfect ending would be. Suddenly some other-worldly creature attacks and kills everyone?? Explosions as the military sweeps in to protect their secret government project?? Maybe a character that rises from the dead again and again and again...

To quote Maynard James Keenan, "Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?"

March 24, 2008 - 6:36am

I'll look for it, IG.

Naw, I'm not really scared by the monsters. At least, not after I put the book down. LOL!

I've been trying to think of

IntricateGirl's picture
IntricateGirl Says:

I've been trying to think of what could go horribly wrong, and at any given time, I can come up with several different things. lol I've got one in particular that has the potential to get nasty, and it crept up again yesterday, which would explain why I had the dream last night. In fact, a lot of the imagery of the dream makes sense in this situation. Overall, I think it's an amalgamation of what you said and what Spooky said, plus some other things, I'm sure. I think that may be why it was so difficult for me to figure out. It's everything being lumped in together.

And no, no Stephen King for me. I hate saying it, but the first thing I thought when I woke up was, "Shit. I just had a dream about the Nazis." If King was going to do that story, he'd do a much better job than I could ever hope to do.

this must have been the week for very weird dreams

ammorton's picture
ammorton Says:

Monday night I had one right out of a movie. My entire yard was this massive junk pile and something was living underneath it all. You could look out and watch it all move around. At one point these two girls were walking all over it and by the time I could get their attention--yep too late. It had drug them under like rag dolls. Then pushed their mangled, headless bodies back up and ontop of the pile of junk. One was missing an arm and leg, it was scary, but no blood.
It kept going and switching scenery here and there.
The most bizzare thing is that I hit my snooze button three times before finally getting up from it.
Each time I hit the snooze button, I would go right back to sleep and continue. I have never done that with a dream before, much as I have tried with some.

March 20, 2008 - 11:36am

Of all the dreams to have that happen, Ammorton.

Or, you'll very soon become the owner of a junkyard. OR, your husband and kids need to quit leaving their crap on the lawn!

I've had more of those types of dreams than I'd ever like! Where I keep sinking back into it every time I go back to sleep. And, they're always nightmares! Never once have they been nice dreams!
