Wedding Flowers

IntricateGirl's picture

June is traditionally the time to get married. It's not hard to imagine why. For most of the country, it's not yet too warm, and all of the flowers seem to look their most beautiful.

For my wedding, we used silk flowers, and to a certain degree I am happy about that decision. I can go upstairs and look at my bouquet, and it looks exactly how it looked then. The problem, of course, is that then it looked silk. ROFL.

A web release from Dot Flowers got me thinking about wedding flowers. I even managed to learn something that I had never really thought about before. My favorite flower, Calla Lilies are not really a flower at all. They are an extension of the stem called a spathe. I had already noticed that they didn't really have petals like other flowers, but I quickly dismissed it in favor of looking at their beauty. I think if I ever decide to remarry my husband (unlikely, except for the chance at new jewelry, a pretty dress, and real flowers) I would carry Calla Lilies. I think they are so elegant.

Another flower that is popular for weddings is the Dendrobium Orchid. While these are beautiful worked into a bride's hair, I have never cared for orchids. They have always seemed too fussy for me.

Dahlias are nice, and I think they would make a great flower choice for weddings where kids play an important part of the wedding. They are so playful, and really fun to look at. My favorite are the Dinnerplate Dahlias, which are called that because of their size.

Daisys and Chrysanthemums are nice, but a little too commonplace for my taste. But I can't argue that they are classic.

Baby's Breath is used in almost every wedding bouquet, but it's one of my least favorite flowers, so I left it out. I like a nice, clean bouquet that doesn't include a bunch of filler. But again, it is certainly a classic.
