Watch What You Eat

food poisoning | illness | Sickness

Wednesday night I'm sitting in a hotel room, about to talk to my wife via instant messaging, and she asked me how I felt. I wrote back that, suddenly, I wasn't feeling well at all. By the time she wrote back to ask me what was wrong, things were going pretty badly. I was starting to feel shaky and somewhat off balance, and I was starting to get really cold. I wrote back saying I had to sign off and was getting into bed, turned the heat in the room to full blast, and got under the covers as the first chills hit my body.

Oddly enough, I went through this same thing earlier this year, and once again it came on really fast. The chills just run through the entire body, and there's really nothing one can do about it. I'll admit it was scary being in a hotel room all by myself, but the last time I was with my wife and there wasn't anything she could do. I knew getting into the shower wouldn't help, as the chills were inside my body and I'd tried that before, and I'd also tried putting a heater right on me before, along with an electric blanket, but I didn't have either of those available to me in a hotel room.

It finally ceased 3 hours later, but I never broke a sweat, even though the room was extremely hot by this time (when you're really cold, even hot air doesn't feel hot when you're breathing is), and I was wearing my heavy sweats. But I started feeling comfortable, and that was enough. I ended up staying in bed 10 hours, rare for me to begin with, but especially rare while being out of town, and still woke up tired. I might have dozed a couple of times while I was shivering, but not for long.

Later on, a pharmacist friend of mine asked if I also had some nausea, and said if I did I probably had some food poisoning. Well, that's extremely possible. That day I'd started out eating one egg at home, lunch and food at a reception after a seminar, and then mini burgers along with french fries in the hotel. I told my wife later that the burgers seemed a bit off, but I can't legitimately blame anything on that because of all the other stuff I ate. The last time I had this same problem, I just don't remember eating anything all that odd, and right now can't remember if my wife and I even went out to eat, though it's possible since it was a Sunday. However, the swiftness of it all is astounding, which tells me that it had to be something eaten relatively recently before the event.

Anyway, this is now going to make me a bit more conscious of where I'm eating and what I'm eating, because if I don't learn something from two episodes, I'm a moron. Unfortunately, I'm stuck eating food out when I'm away from home, as there's no facilities for cooking in the room, and I'm gone for a week at a time. If I have to settle for McDonalds or Wendy's every day becaue it's a known commodity, much as I'd hate that, well, one does what one has to do, right? Ugh!

Isn't it amazing

How quickly little tiny microbes can take a person down? We think we are so tough until a virus or bacteria go to work on us. Stay healthy, prepare the food you eat.

As I said, Ms Zola,...

I'm in a hotel room; no facilities to prepare my own meals.

I always

I always go to something like Marriot Garden or Extended Stay where they have a dining room and kitchen. The kitchen has everything in it including potas and pans and table ware, a dish washer and they even provide the cascade. It's a lot better than getting sick. I know for a fact that many restaurants don't wash the vegetables they slice and put on your burger.

You only get those options, ms zola,...

when you're in or near cities that have places like that, or you're the one paying for the rooms. In this case, I have neither, so I'm somewhat stuck with where I am. That's the bugaboo of consulting sometimes, but at least overall it's a nice enough place.

Just glad your feeling better

I would hate to have that happen to me alone. I like to have someone around when I am that sick. Thank god I dont get sick and have been lucky enough not to have ever gotten food poisening.

Thanks Ammorton,...

not taking chances tonight; I'm having pizza, which may be bad, but it should be safe, as it's NOT from the hotel.
