UK vs US

Ok, I'm originally from the UK and moved to the US back in 2002. I married an American who was stationed in the UK and he needed to come back to the US to finish College.

Since being here I have had so many people ask me what is the biggest difference between the UK and the US, so I'm going to let everyone know what I have noticed.

First thing is the fact there are so many fast food restaurants in one city/town. Back in the UK they are few and far between. Take where I live now, we have about 4 McDonalds, 3 Sonics and 3 Whataburgers all in city. Back in the UK in my home town we got our first McDonalds in about 2001!! If we ever wanted McDonalds we had to go to the big shopping city. It is so easy to not eat healthy and to not cook meals at home, when on your commute home from work you are faced with the big signs for these places. I've been there and done it myself. The convenience is there.

Next thing is healthcare. What is it with having to pay to be healthy? Back in the UK we didn't have to pay for any medical services. Granted the health service isn't the best but you get what you pay for. Obvioulsy, we have the option to pay for the better healthcare, but most people don't. Over here in the US, you basically get scared to get sick incase you have to pay stupid amounts of money. The medical insurance that you purchase to help you not have to pay so much money at the doctors office/hospital doesn't even cover all kinds of medical situations. I recently had my 2nd baby and I had only just finished paying for my 1st. Its crazy how much things cost in the medical field.

One thing I do miss is being able to WALK to the grocery store! We live in a kind of rural, small city and we have to drive to the local grocery store. When we did live near a grocery store, I got a lot of looks from people, who were in their cars, probably thinking I was crazy for not driving. I loved the fact that I could walk anywhere I wanted to in the UK, I never even got my drivers license until I was 22, I never needed to, but my husband gave me a reality check when we had decided to move to the US!!!

The last thing I do love about the US is the fact that it is so easy to purchase land and feel as though you are living in the country. Back in the UK, its either land locked or you have to have loads of money just to own a small amount of land. The US is definately the Land of Oppurtunity.

So those are the major differences that I have noticed. I love both countries for different things (I know I haven't said much about the good things about the US but I'll save that for another entry) and I wouldn't change my decision on leaving the UK. Who knows we may end up living there sometime in the far future.

Thanks for reading.
