So lately all the talk here in Loundoun County, Virginia has been about the removal of the book "And Tango Makes Three" about a pair of male penguins who are residents at the Central Park Zoo in New York. The story is based on the true lives of these two fellows who made a nest together and eventually parented a baby penguin (from egg to independence)who was given to them by zoo workers. It seems like a sweet story that is worth reading, but apparently some parents in the Loundoun County school system did not. They complained about the suggestion/advocation of a homosexual lifestyle that the two male penguins seemed to live. Perhaps those parents didn't see the movie "March of the Penguins" in which you learn that male penguins are the ones who keep penguin eggs warm and do the parenting of young penguins while the females rest and get food. The Superintendant of Loundoun County Schools had the book pulled from elementary school library shelves and put in a section of resource books that are only available to teachers. My goodness, such knee-jerk reactions over something that is simply a parents job to do. If the parents object to the subject matter of the book, then they should be the ones to shelter their children from the information, but perhaps I would be okay with my child reading the sweet story and discussing how neat it is that it is something different and then maybe research penguin behavior. It does not seem like a story that is anything other than it what it is and if the message the author wanted to get out is one of tolerance, then so be it. I don't want some other parent dictating what my children are allowed to read. That is my job, not the schools or anyone else's. Shame on the parents who put the school system in such a terrible position of censorship.
