When I worked in design and technology education, the highlight of the year was the annual show at the National Exhibition Centre. It was a busy time of year. We spent months planning the publication schedule so we'd have something new to offer and weeks making sure we were going to have decent displays. For the three days of the show we left one person in the office and the rest of us decamped to the exhibition site, first to set up our displays and then to work out how five of us could exist in such a small space. Once the show opened, hordes of primary school teachers descended on us, hoping for a deal.
Of course, the best bit of a trade show is visiting the other stands to see what freebies you could scrounge. We found ourselves collecting free glasses cleaners, springy plastic toys and all sorts of other things simply because they were free - and to pass the time. Trade shows can be quite dull by the time you've been asked the same questions for the hundredth time. That said, it was a welcome break from office routine - made sweeter by the fact that we could get a day off in lieu over the next month - great chance for a long weekend.
