Toto "Rosanna"
After scoring impressive hits with 1978's Toto and 1979's Hydra, the band Toto suffered their biggest commercial failure with the release of the third album, 1981's Turn Back. The individual members of the band remained in-demand session players for acts like Hall & Oates, Donna Summer, and Elton John, but they were in need of a hit when they released Toto IV in April 1982.
They got it in the form of the single "Rosanna," an ode to guitarist Steve Lukather's then-girlfriend, actress Rosanna Arquette. The breezy song of devotion featured some inspired keyboards, a tasteful guitar solo, and an irresistible chorus. Bounding quickly up the charts, "Rosanna" broke into the US Top 40 in May. Five weeks later, the song became Toto's first Top Ten hit. "Rosanna" would become one of that summer's biggest hits, spending nearly three months in the Top Ten and five weeks at #2 where it would peak.
"Rosanna" served to make Toto IV a multi-platinum smash. not only the band's biggest hit but one of the best-selling albums of the year. It would be the first of four hit singles from the album which would continue to chart for the next year, ending with 1983's "I Won't Hold You Back," which would make the Top Ten in June of that year - mere months after "Rosanna" earned a Grammy for Record Of The Year.
