Torture in West Virginia
See, I talk about racism and some of the things that happen to minorities that don't happen to other people all the time, and people like to dismiss those things.
So then, what about this story about a black woman in West Virginia who was kidnapped by up to 6 people and tortured for a week, until, luckily, the police got an anonymous tip as to where she might be?
This wasn't just a kid's prank either; four of those arrested were in their 20's; the other two are in their 40's. This was deliberate and malicious; just a terrible story.
And the story says they're "thinking" about it as a race crime. Thinking about it; are you kidding me? Just what does it take to call something a hate crime these days?

Horrible
That's horrible Catfish. In my time as a child protection worker and afterwards, as a Counsellor, I was told of many horrors but the one that affected me most was to help a person regain her stability through working through the memories of such a time as you described. In that case it was two white men and a young white woman. It was hard for me to bear, and I was only a listener. I don't doubt there was a race factor in the case you have blgoged about but it can happen to anyone anywhere and in their own community. I am conscious when I protest about torture by government agents that the same indescribable evil is taking place all over, even to children in their own homes by their parents. I've heard those stories first hand too. My heart goes out to that young black woman too. She's got a hell of a journey ahead of her to recover.

you have got to be kidding me!!! There is no doubt that this is a hate crime. I am going to be sooo pissed if they dont charge it as such. I feel so bad for this woman. What is wrong with people? I absolutely have no tolerance for this kind of crap from anyone.

Yes, I read about it during lunch at work, our Catfish.
This is beyond dreadful. No matter how far along I get in this world, I will never be able to understand what motivates people to maliciously hurt another human being this way. That poor girl. How shameful and uncivilized!! How unfortunate that these brainless, evil-minded hooligans must walk the earth with the rest of us!
I expect the scoundrels, every last one, will be punished severely--sent to prison the balance of their wretched days. And let them be in a cell with others as vindictive and wicked as themselves, that they may find themselves victims and learn what it is like to suffer unjustly, at the merciless whim of another! I say, good bye, to jail, and good riddance!! >:(

because they didn't kill anyone, I'm betting they won't even get 10 years, unless the feds come in and call it a hate crime, which, I believe, is a federal offense. Their defense, or reason for doing it, should be interesting.
And to think, people thought Michael Vick was monstrous.

To Add To The General
opinion catfish...this is beyond my imagination. I hope these people(animals is not even a good enough word here) get the maximum plus sentence. That girls' emotional, and mental state are really in jeopardy now, those unseen scars will last a life time. I don't see how anything other than a hate crime would fit such cruelty and inhumanity.
Our local news finally picked up the story today, and along with the perps' arrested they were 'allegedly' two friends that drove the girl to that hellish place and left her there,(the whole story is not out yet maybe?), and as of this evening those two people(her supposed friends)have not been charged with any crime so far. With friends like those___ ___fill in the blanks with any words you like, who needs enemies.

A quick update
Seems that the state has decided against hate crimes charges, and, in this case, it's a good thing. Seems if they only go for hate crimes it would only put them in jail for 10 years, whereas, in that state, with the kidnapping charge is brings life in prison. Okay, I can live with that now, though, supposedly, the federal government reserves the right to add on later if something happens.

Catfish, I'm sure you have already seen
this abomination that happened outside of Jena, LA. I'm sure it was a response to the protests over the "Jena 6." But it further underscores the racial bigotry that is alive and well in this country today. And it was done by an 18 year old and a 16 year old.
This kind of stuff absolutely terrifies me.
