Tips For Pumping Gas & Where To Buy It

expense | gas | gas stations | oil

I haven't checked out any of this for myself - I got it as a fwd. But, I thought, considering some of our conversations, it might be of interest to people here. And, if we can find out who is using imported oil products and avoid using them, it might make a difference!

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried belo w ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some f the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON

Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor.

An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies im port Middle Eastern oil.

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels

Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels

Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels

Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels

Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:

Sunoco.......... ........0 barrels

Conoco..................0 barrels

Sinclair.................0 barrels

B P/Phillips............0 barrels

Hess.......................0 barrels

ARC0....................0 barrels

If you go to Sunoco.com , you will get a list of the station locations near you.

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

Unfortunately,

Snopes has already debunked this. I'm all for cheaper oil, but the economics of the situation make it much more difficult than boycotting a few stations in favor of others.

On a personal note, there's a gas station we pass by every now and then when we travel, that is trying to exploit the whole market of people who want to avoid Arab oil. Their building is kind of a hoot, because it has a van parked out front with a large mural of Osama bin Laden on the side, with a target over his face. But it's located right next to a Quicktrip, which has the cheapest gas prices in town. Because of that, it's always empty, and I have no idea how they've stayed in business this long. As if that wasn't bad enough, they've gotten a lot of negative publicity because they had to admit that they don't know where their oil comes from.

WOW LOL

Ya, that's why I added the "disclaimer" at the top. I read the forward and thought - "well, what the hell - it might be of use to someone". But, didn't look it up.

Wow, that's some tactic they're using! I don't really need to think about gas prices much since I'm still sans car. But, if I did, I'm so not finacially prepared to forgo cheaper prices. It's like a million years ago when I boycotted Cracker Barrell products because they discriminated against gays. It was pretty easy to do - even though I LOVED their Swiss! - because they are in the pricier group. But, when it goes the other way..........

Thanks for the info!

The part about filling up when the temp. is cooler is true.

Gasoline does expand when it is warmer - so in the summer you actually do not get a full gallon of gas. But I'm not sure just how significant the difference is.

As for the other, well, if one company can't sell its gas, then another company that's getting all the business will run low on supplies and buy from the company with a surplus. So even if the 2nd company does not actually do business with a Middle Eastern country, they'll wind up with Middle Eastern gas from the 1st company. That's partly because you have to factor in the refining process, which is time consuming. It's just not possible for a gas company that's doing a suddenly booming business to quickly crank out large volumes of additional product.

You'll also face higher prices from the 2nd company because the demand is larger than the supply. When demand outstrips supply, prices will go up. Don't kid yourself that a gas company would lower it's prices simply because everyone was buying from them. That might work for Walmart but it sure doesn't work that way in a gas crisis.

When I read that PW

I thought it fell into the "every little bit helps" catagory. It might not make the biggest difference in the world, but when gas prices are so high and we're already being choosy about driving if we don't have to - it's not a huge thing to buy it early in the day even if the "help" is small.

Oh, and I wasn't looking at it as making the prices go down, but more that if we become more educated, it might (maybe....) help the effort to use only our own resources. Sassy brought that up the other day and once more I was wondering why we sit back and allow our country to be heald hostage by another when we don't need to be. So, this kind of thing is a super long shot, I figured "what the Hell".

In that light, Spooky, it does seem to make sense

that we could at least cut down on how much we are buying from unfriendly countries. But I have no idea if it works on that level or not.

And you are absolutely right that every little bit helps. I always fill up with gas first thing in the morning and have ever since I learned about the gas expanding in hot weather. Living in TX, I figure I save myself at least several gallons every summer.

Me either, PW

Who knows if doing something like this will make any kind of impact at all. I, personally, have very little faith that people will respond and participate or that - even if the entire country DID - that it would really change anything. But, my lack of faith has been proven wrong before.

Oh, and remember - I was also living in TX when I took that writing trip to Roswell, NM without giving a single thought to gas! If it came up today, I wouldn't even entertain the idea of going. :-(

Also,

wrong time of year for this, but ethanol doesn't work as well in the winter, in colder states. In cold temperatures, it's best to go for the normal unleaded.

spookyyank's picture

That's what I do anyway lol

IntricateGirl's picture

In my part of the country,

In my part of the country, ethanol is HEAVILY subsidized, and it's cheaper than the normal gas. Unfortunately, with the news I'm reading about it, we'll pay for it later, and we'll pay a lot more for it in the long-run. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

spookyyank's picture

Oh ya, I forgot

that other parts of the country are more advanced than this one! It kind of blows my mind that California is still farther behind on things like this. This "progressive" state has become kind of sad.
