Three Prescriptions for Male Teachers

feminism | History | O Ceallaigh's Observations | politics | teaching

1. Pay. We the People in these United States have always made teaching an economically marginal vocation. There was a reason most teaching was done in a church setting, where the community counted on the "calling" to cut their costs, and the Sunday offering plate offered some level of security to the teacher. Secularized teaching naturally attracted the marginalized or subsidized, especially unmarried women still living at home or, as spinsters, with few other career options. Few people with talent now lack more lucrative options. If we desire talented persons as teachers, pay must be competitive with those other options. Especially given the expense, and marginal value, of the formal education we now insist that teachers acquire.

Given the current dynamics of school systems in this country, I don't see how we can proceed with needed pay increases unless we:

2. Nationalize the schools. I'm sorry, but I think that the shenanigans of local school control criminally reinforce social stratification (rich vs. poor) and both race and gender inequity. I believe that, in this instance, We the People have demonstrated that we are unfit to govern ourselves. Even given the known ills and potential abuses of a nationalized system, I would adopt one tomorrow if I could. That system would abolish private options for levels K-6, and standardize pay and curricula for all schools teaching those grades - which had then better ensure that their students can pass that 1885 grammar test that was mentioned here awhile back. Yes I would allow certain local adjustments, but dammit I want kids going to school in downtown Oakland to have the same bloody resources and talent pool available to them as is available to all the limousine liberals here in Berkeley.

Private options can be reinstated after grade 6, when young persons reach puberty and start making career choices - I think it a crime to imprison a young person in high school, listening to drones, who is already decided on auto mechanic or computer repair tech. After all, it's not like we don't have an Internet for continuing education options.

3. Men need to be visibly at the vanguard of quashing unacceptable behaviors. Men, not women, need to be the ones shouting down instances of abuse in schools and elsewhere. There is no excuse either for World Championship Wrestling or Barry Bonds. Both need to be eliminated by the unanimous voices of men. Right now, it's pretty much the unanimous voices of men that are keeping these things there. Yes, the "bad boy" image is appealing. And it even attracts the chicks - who practice on you and then go looking for a real man to invest in. And if at that point all they find are bad boys, they may just decide that they can do without. Or haven't you been reading some of the posts on here? There are already subcultures in this country in which the male is reduced to the social role, and status, of the roving stallion.

Hmm...what's your problem with "female teachers"?

I've read some of the posts about "female teachers" and I don't really understand what point those bloggers (not you) are trying to make. Did they have a terrible experience with a female teacher? Did they lose a job to a female teacher?

I agree that we need a change in our school system. Better pay, better teachers (instead of bitter ones) and a better system overall.

I teach youth on Sundays and one of their biggest issues is with school. These teens know which teachers really care and which parts of school are just a joke. A few of them already know what they want to do in life and yet they still have a few years of school left. They hate going to school now and yet what else can they do?

Regarding your comment about "bad boys"... you know a lot of what was said is just in fun, right? Also, I don't know that woman are exactly clamoring for the biggest, baddest guy they can find. There's a difference between having a "bad boy image" and being a "really bad person". I'm not looking for the latter...

To me a bad boy is someone who isn't afraid to question authority, who isn't afraid to call someone out when they report opinions as "fact" (much like you did yesterday)... someone who doesn't just go along with what they're expected to, but attempts to reform the system, or at least offer suggestions, instead of just complaining about it (like other people, who shall remain nameless)...

You've got my "bad boy" stamp of approval O Ceallaigh ;-)

And now I've got to get back to work :)

I don't have a problem, I don't think ...

... but others around here apparently do, and I find the argument is getting progressively more polarized - "X is out to get Y" and vice versa. Sic. :) My point is "never attribute to malice that can be adequately explained by stupidity." Or ignorance. Especially of history. And of the factors above and beyond yelling at each other that make things the way they are.

My overarching concern is the decline in our culture of positive male role models. Behind the bitterness over the numerical dominance of women, and the apparent dominance of female-centered attitudes, in the schools is, I think, a real concern over whether men are indeed more than fertilizer(s). One of the many reasons I tend to spurn television is what I find to be a consistent portrayal of men as bashers or dweebs. Or sex objects. Where is Flabio when we need him? :) Not many guys really know what they're doing - for that they turn to the woman.

Regarding your comment about "bad boys"... you know a lot of what was said is just in fun, right?

Mais certainement, ma jeune. But behind the joking, believe it or not, is a very large research domain exploring sex roles and what induces them. The line "practice on you and then go looking for a real man to invest in" is my synopsis of the results of research to date on mate choice in primates - including those rhesus monkeys you've heard about - and, ta da, us. Not to mention fish, birds and various other creatures.

You've got my "bad boy" stamp of approval

Ooh, hot! Does that mean I can get a date?

"Du-UDE! Will you stop beating on the chick already? Leave her alone in the Seattle sunshine. Maybe we'll get some some day. Get over here and get your doses of Metamucil and Lipitor. Your cane's in the corner."

Teachers & Pay

As I stated in my blog today (About School Uniforms) I went to private school for 7 years. I had some wretched teachers. To this day, my assumption for their complete disregard to caring is their (lack of) pay. I feel this is a huge issue. I think these teachers feel stuck in a rut, teaching year after year for pennies. In addition the schools lack computers, paper, pencils, etc. This must be so aggrivating.
It almost angers me that some Detroit schools are in desperate need of supplies and there is "no money". YET, for Superbowl '06 we spent a rediculous amount making the city "look" nice for the tourists & media.

In a seperate point, I agree that men do need to step up. A teenage male will respond better to an adult male telling him to "knock it off" vs an adult female.
Good work O' C.

Thanks!

And vice versa (having just discovered your blog). Give me a tick or three.

I wasn't talking to YOU....

I was talking to the guy behind you ;-) I'm kidding...

"What's your problem with 'female teachers'?" was directed towards those other bloggers who seem to have a lot of resentment towards women bubbling over from their blogs.

What's funny is that I doubt they'll ever read this post or the comments because they're too busy coming up with more garbage and clicking on each other's blogs.

Anyway, you make some excellent points in your blog and I have nothing but high regard for you and your way of thinking...

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm agreeing to a date. You should let me play matchmaker for you and some nice lady blogger someday... in fact, I already have someone in mind for you... :)

By the way Realitycheck, I think your comment was right on too... I've been meaning to comment on your school uniform blog all morning, but this pesky "job" keeps interfering *sigh*

The date

not agreeing to a date

I think you knew that was a joke and were merely making sure that the humor-impaired around here understood that. :) Speaking of which, you might get a copy of James Thurber's My World and Welcome To It and read the stories "Courtship Through the Ages" and especially "Death in the Zoo". Then maybe we can talk about matchmaking. :) :)

Who are we hooking O Ceallaigh up with?

I must know who you have in mind myspaceoryours. This is great gossip!

"Death in the Zoo"???

What does that have to do with courtship?

You're going to make me read it, aren't you? :-/

yep, guess I am

I tried to find a copy online, but I guess the Thurber Estate (or whoever owns the copyright on Thurber's works) isn't interested in seeing most of his writings in electronic format. Even on pay-per-view, which surprises me.

And yes, it's all about courtship. Especially, what happens in courtship when somebody else picks the courting couple. Hint, hint. :) (You and Reality are simply evil. 'course, I knew that. :) )

Me? Evil?

I never said I wasn't...;-)

SOP

it looks like she may be involved with someone

That's usually the case on this space. After all, it isn't match.com. Or WritingUp. :)

Pay is becoming important part across all carriers

Therefore a proper attention is required to given to this issue. Many talented people leave for better pay options
