I went to school that had mandatory uniforms. While I hated my uniform back then (because it represented school to me, and I passionately hated school), what I see now makes me think that school uniforms are actually not a bad idea. Kids are crazy about being "cool," so those from wealthier families show off wearing fancier clothes, and those who cannot afford it are shunned and ridiculed.
This starts as early as elementary school, and it is plain disgusting. These little fashionistas know nothing about the value of money and things, yet they act like some sort of spoiled celebrities. When I hear of a seven-year-old who scorns another seven-year-old because "they buy their clothes at Walmart," I say, "Dress them all the same and make them try to distinguish themselves by their talents and personality, not the size of mom & dad's wallet." To some, this may turn out to be one of the biggest lessons they learn.
I have heard students who get to wear uniforms comment that it makes them feel like a team. Some girls say they are relieved that they do not have to think of a new outfit every day and compete with each other. Of course, a uniform needs to be fairly attractive so that the young people do not feel embarrassed wearing it.
Parents, too, would be much relieved, both financially and emotionally, if their children wore uniforms. One new uniform a year vs. a whole fancy wardrobe - you tell me which one is less money and headache.
Wearing a nice uniform that is a little on the formal side will teach the students to be comfortable in formal attire and prepare them for professional environment with its business suits and dress codes. If casual or, worse, sloppy-casual is all you have known, suddenly donning a suit & tie will cause additional stress - and it will show. Students who are accustomed to uniforms will not have this problem. When you wear a uniform on a daily basis, you get used to it, to the point that you do not even notice. Thus comes the natural ease that you can't learn in a matter of days.
Arguments have been made that uniforms rob people of their individuality. It might be true, to some extent, but the obvious advantages outweigh that. Besides, keeping your individuality while being dressed the same as your peers is another valuable lesson.
