Once again, another Republican politician is being forced into resigning because, it turns out, he's gay, and had an affair with another man. Well, in this case a one night stand, but he's been outed, and is resigning.
Overall, I don't care that he's gay, but two things once again are disturbing. One, this guy, a Republican state legislator in Washington state, repeatedly voted against measures that were advocated to try to protect gays in the state. I'm sorry, but when you're a hypocrite, you deserve everything you get coming to you, short of being killed. In a written statement, Rep. Richard Curtis, of La Center, said that while he believes he's done a lot of good during his time in the Legislature, "events that have recently come to light have hurt a lot of people. I sincerely apologize for any pain my actions may have caused," he wrote. "This has been damaging to my family, and I don't want to subject them to any additional pain that might result from carrying out this matter under the scrutiny that comes with holding public office."
Two, I keep wondering why, in today's world, even with him being a smarmy weasel for his political positions, he actually has to resign just because this has come out. I mean, most of America doesn't care, so why does the Republican party care so much? Don't think it's that bad? Well, the House Minority Leader of the state, Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis, said that as more "troubling" details began to emerge "it has become clear that he can no longer effectively represent the constituents who elected him."
See, this is the part that Republicans don't get when it comes to the their party's politics. They advocate hate against homosexuals to the point where homosexuals that join their party feel they have to be harder on other homosexuals, as well as marry to make others believe they're straight, just to be an effective legislator. In essence, they're as hard against other homosexuals as Judge Clarence Thomas is against black people (yeah, I'm taking another shot at this guy). So these guys get married for their careers, but they can't suppress the urges that are as natural to them as anyone else, and they succumb, and sometimes get found out, and, well, there you go.
I guess if you go into something by trying to suppress your true feelings, and by lying to yourself and everyone else, you kind of get what you deserve. But I still remember that Tony Brown, of Tony Brown's Journal for many, many years, said he joined the Republican party, even though his politics were liberal, because only in that way did he feel he could affect changes that might make other party members think about what might be the right thing to do sometimes. Maybe one of these days one of these gay legislators who's hiding what he or she is will be brave enough to try the same thing.
