The Wait is Finally Over!
Well, after nearly a year of false-starts, empty promises, and more excuses than Paris Hilton, I am all too pleased to announce that The Speakeasy is finally, actually - REALLY - open!
Seriously!
Those of you who are In The Loop may not have thought I'd ever get it done, but you know I've been working on it for a very long time now (or at least telling you that I have, if you didn't believe me) and now, the moment of truth has finally arrived!
I know I'm just gushing, but damn! It's taken a very, very long time to get it to the point it's at right now and while there is still a long way to go and much to learn, I'm just ecstatic!
I started working specifically on the forums earlier this afternoon - around 3 or so - almost by accident; I had plans for a whole different area(
and just wanted to do one, little thing. But when I couldn't get it to do what I wanted it to do (which I really didn't think would take that long), I ended up frustrated enough that I simply had to get it done. In so doing, I began trying new and different things. I was at that point where it's like, "Oh well, if that screws the whole thing up, then it does!" And somehow - I couldn't honestly tell you, point by point, exactly what I did or how I arrived to the conclusions I did - I just kind of stumbled upon what I needed to do and things just started clicking.
Now, all this bragging aside (well, it's not really bragging because I honestly managed to get one thing right and the rest just started following into place behind it), it still has a long ways to go, but if you'll take the time to sign-up and drop us a line or two and just look around, I really think you'll agree that it's really good-looking! I can't take that much credit for it because the design and functions of the software is what is so great, but whomever you credit it for it, I am so happy, I could just burst!
I really implore everyone to come over and start up some conversations! You don't have to talk about anything in particular - the site is generally about comics and RPGs and all that, but you know I also go into just whatever the hell is on my mind - and like I say there, I just put up some general ideas for places. I'm more than willing to let the boards fashion themselves into whatever they become, so don't feel at all limited as to what you "should" talk about or anything like that.
There is a whole lot more to be done, as I'm really just learning my way around their design and all of that, and I also don't know all of the features or capabilities of the software as yet, but I am so proud of myself for having finally gotten this far that I just had to gush to everyone.
There is a literal host of new content on the way - a lot of which could have been finished today until I got sidetracked with this part of it - but it was well worth it.
Please come over and hang out and feel free to make suggestions, point out flaws and inconsistencies, or whatever else you want to do or say!
Besides, I can always delete what you say.

Heh. I really think it looks great, do you? The dang thing has more functions than most of the message boards I've seen and used and it looks cool, to boot!
So now I'm looking for Moderators and suggestions, but now we have a place to play... until we break it.
I guess you got to burst The Speakeasy's cherry, P-Dubs. Now I have to go see what you said. I hope you were gentle. The Speakeasy had its whole life ahead of it to feel heartbreak; I just hope its first message was something special.

But thanks for all the kudos. If anyone wants to be a moderator on any of the boards, let me know. I really don't know how everything works, but the more I play with it, the more I find out it can do. And you can promote your own blogs and stuff there too, so don't hold back!

Thank you all for the kudos, but it isn't all that much yet. I have a whole, whole lot more to do. My plan was always to get the very basics in place in order to introduce and maintain the overall theme, atmosphere, mood, tone, etc., and then do the real stuff. Like painting the lighter colors in broad strokes first. I just accidentally figured out how to do a lot of things at once with the chat program when I was specifically looking to do one thing.

It's great when it happens like that and I agree that it looks pretty darned good, but the only reason the entire thing is still in black and white is because I have yet to figure out how to make the color scheme I designed last night take hold. I keep setting it, but it keeps going back to the default.
But that's okay - that's what I mean by having things in place. I think it looks good enough that I can leave it like that for now until I get a lot more of the content up, then I can spend a day or two tweaking just the chat... then a few days tweaking just the blog... etc., etc.
REAL companies that do REAL websites have whole teams and shit to do this stuff. Or they design them out of the box by just modifying a pre-packaged kind of site. This is almost all from scratch, using no pre-designed templates or anything and almost all of the content is original (even though a lot of the art is either period or computerized to look period in order to carry the theme, etc.).
It's a LOT of work that can get really tedious at times, but I really thank you! I just hope everyone keeps up their enthusiasm (including me!) and it becomes its own animal over time.

I think the site is great as it is and if your telling me that it is not done yet? Well, I cant wait for you to get done(no pun intended). As for the black and white, I actually like it that way. I think it has character, but I cant wait to see what the color scheme you have in mind will be like.

Administrative Messages
Those kinds of msgs are administrative - they show up on all the boards - just announcements. You have to be a Moderator to respond to them, but you can always just start a new thread or post to the Lobby or one of those forums.
I think only Ammorton is having a problem getting logged in and I don't know what that problem is, but I can say that there have been some server issues with The OddBlog lately too, so it could be something with the host, too. Still don't know.
