The VH1 Corollary

So last night I'm flipping through the channels and low and behold I come across "I Love Toys". This is VH1's latest countdown show. I sat and watched for about an hour and a half, I made it from toy 60 down to like toy 35. I quite enjoyed the countdown eventhough I didn't agree with where a lot of the toys ended up.

This is not the first time VH1 has robbed me of my precious time (I mean I could have been watching Deal or No Deal). There is something about the VH1 countdowns that grabs a hold of me and just doesn't let go. It doesn't even matter what the subject is: if it's a countdown and it's on VH1 then I'm going to watch. From this point forward I will refer to this phenomenon as the VH1 corollary.

Let me give you some examples of the VH1 corollary. The first one I will site is the Top 20 Countdown. This show airs Saturday morning with repeats on Sunday and Monday (i think, check you local listings). This show counts down the twenty most popular songs of the week. Don't ask me how they decide what's popular, that's not the point i'm trying to make.

The point i'm trying to make is that on average I know about three or four songs from this countdown (since songs repeat from week to week, i'm talking about debut songs). Aside from only knowing like three of the songs, I may only like one or two. Even knowing this I will still sit there and watch until the countdown is over.

I think the VH1 corollary came to be in the last week of the 20th century. You know when every radio and tv station was doing a top 100 [insert any subject] countdown. It seemed appropriate at the time and I didn't then and still don't have a problem with it.

My problem is that VH1 has somehow figured out a way to trap people (when I say people, i mean me) into watching these programs. I mean they had a countdown of the Top 100 Rock Ballads and I watched. Before that show the closest I had come to a rock ballad was LL Cool J's "I Need Love" and Biggie's "Me and My B*tch".

I don't know how or what VH1 does whatever it does. It's obviously doesn't matter what the subject is. Maybe it's the funny commentary, i don't know. I just want to know if I'm the only one the VH1 corollary affects.

By the way, if you leave a comment and I don't respond immediately, i'm probably watching another VH1 countdown.

You're not the only one... I've wasted many Saturday afternoons parked in front of the TV watching another pointless VH1 countdown...

I love watching the sarcastic comments people make... but it was getting to be a REALLY BAD habit... so I just stopped turning the TV on all together, unless there was something I really wanted to watch...

Of course, now I waste my time here... ok, well not WASTE my time... but I spend a lot of time here...how's that? ;-)

This is what I'm talking about, VH1 has taken your tv hostage. It's just not right. If you want to watch tv you shouldn't have to worry about getting sucked into some stupid countdown.
