The Teachers(!) of Rajshahi University in Bangladesh and Their Mischief

They seem to be very gentle and polite. It is very hard to assume that they can touch you even after you hit them. In their outlook they are very modest and intelligent. But actually they are not so; they are very rude, cruel and clever as well.

I actually tell about the teachers of a public university in Bangladesh; namely, Rajshahi University –“the second largest university of the country”, as they call it proudly. After the greatest betray in the history, during 1973, they achieved these autocracy. Though the higher authority of the university, that is, the Senate was given the autonomy to rule the university, unfortunately this Senate is somehow ruled by the teachers themselves. The teachers elect and recommend for the persons to be nominated as the senators, and ultimately those members of the senate turned into a photographic body and loosed the main type of governance upon the teachers except some recruitment processes and the production of some files of recommendation to pass the financial bills.

After 1973 the actual meritorious pupils who had passed from that university almost left the campus, because, the former government tried heart and soul to employ their party-men and followers, who did not possess the appropriate qualification for those positions. Consequently, that government fell down in 1975 and another ruler came into power, who did not forget to suppress the oppositions in the campus and ultimately followed the same policy in the recruitment processes.

Since then, for more than three decade, several political parties ruled the country but the system has not changed, as it was reaped during 1973 to 1975. If a fair international enquiry is held promptly, the world-dwellers can easily find the notorious activities. For God’s sake! By the name of teaching they get employment in the university; but after a few years, not more than 3 to 4 years, their real appearance is revealed in every state. They became the well-known followers of the active party-men; called as white-, blue- or yellow panels. The students have to face many difficulties to complete their courses and examinations. Most of the teachers do not take at least 60% of the classes needed to complete their respective subjects. But they are very fine in their outlook. You can hardly measure that they have finished at least 50% of the required number of lectures. They neither refer the academic books accurately, nor do they provide the lecture sheets. But they consume the books and journals of the university libraries for long days; not rarely, for more than a decades. They have been accommodated inside the campus but in most cases they are late to the classrooms. They neglect and hate the students; except some beautiful female students who can be easily obtained to some male teachers, even though they are not singles. They are highly paid, more than that of a government officer who is two ranks above them. But this news did not yet published even in their home country. And the countrymen do not aware of this. They think about themselves to be the monarchs and the remaining people as the servants, which they have already mentioned at several times. They are very expert to import (!) money from the foreign countries showing the needs of various academic demands. But almost 90% of these go to their own pockets for their luxurious lives. Besides they do not even forget to fight silently against some donor countries.

They are very well-protected by the police in the campus. They are kept in the colonies in the university campus as the chickens (!!) at the incubators. Very much sensitive, they are! You can not imagine what a torturing they can throw against an ordinary student whom they can not capture. But if you even breath aside them loudly, they may trigger a bullet towards you.

During 2003, they made a very comfortable environment for them in the whole country making the chief countryman, that is, the chancellor and the president of the government (the same person) from the teachers. Now they can get escape from every conviction against them as the phenomena happened after the clash between the teachers of Rajshahi and Dhaka University AND the Bangladesh Army. And off course they have been getting rid of more than hundred times severe offences.

They do not allow the students to read the university ordinance but they are very much active to teach (basically, to cheat) the students to follow the rules, which are in favor of the teachers. The teachers mainly came from the rural areas and lower-mid level families but they appear to the students as the giant merchants, especially after having a foreign scholarship or a fellowship. They forget about their past. They think the students as the slave of their own, not uncommonly as the curse to them. If they were not in the campus what a wonderful campus they could enjoy with their wives and children! But however, they can not do so because the government will not pay to them if this case happened.

No journalists, other than a few news-representatives of some national dailies among the students, can enter the academic periphery to collect the news of the situation. And those reporters among the students never dare to report news, which goes against a teacher unless a strong political backing from a group of other teachers from the oppositions is given to them. What’s about the International Reporters? They are very far away from the region where this university is located. So, what will be the future of the students, who were ignorant about the situation of this university, when they had not entered the campus, but ultimately fell into the trap of the attractive campaign of the admission tests of this university? Unfortunately very few students can detect the hidden insights of the teachers even after living in the campus (in the residential halls) for about 7 to 8 years, instead of 4 to 5 years (due to the so called 'session jam' created artificially by the teachers). The students can only see the teachers on the stage of the classroom but there is very little interaction with them.
