The Rolling Stones "Emotional Rescue"

The Rolling Stones entered the '80s as the self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band" and the '70s had certainly proven to consolidate the success they had experienced in the '60s. Along with a string of popular albums that were modern-day classics, the band had scored a dozen Top 40 hits in the US, including Top Ten smashes like "Angie," "Miss You," and "Beast Of Burden."

Their 1980 release Emotional Rescue was actually comprised with a lot of material left over from their previous album, 1978's Some Girls, it hardly slowed their commercial momentum. The album arrived in time for the summer, and another massive world tour, and the title track was chosen as the first single.

Although the group had incorporated elements of the burgeoning disco sound on their previous album, "Emotional Rescue" was still met with some resistence from long-time fans as the song was even more entrenched in the sound of the dance genre. Despite lead singer Mick Jaggar's falsetto and a hypnotic, dance-laden groove, the song still trades on the best elements of dance music, making it a funky, slinky number that did manage to become another major hit.

In July, "Emotional Rescue" became The Rolling Stones' 31st US Top 40 hit and the song needed only five weeks to crack the Top Ten. Predictably, Emotional Rescue topped the album charts and the single eventually peaked at #3 in mid-September while also reaching the Top Ten on the dance charts.
