The cause of the pet scare of 2007 was caused by a company that got some of their ingredients from China. These ingredients were laced with melamine and cyanuric acid. Melamine and cyanuric acid can cause kidney failure in animals by the fact that when they are mixed together they will form crystals which will block kidney function. During this recent scare, approximately 19 animals have died from it. China does not have very strict rules for their manufacturers to adhere to, and, as a result, things like the pet food recall scare, or led paint in toys are going to happen more and more often.
If you are a pet owner and are concerned about your pets safety, please do a periodic search for any recalled pet foods that you might have purchased. If you find that you have purchased contaminated pet food, it is impertinent that you stop feeding it to your pet immediately. If you have closed containers of food, you can return them to the store that you bought them from. With the open containers, it is a good idea to give them to the FDA, or your local veterinarian, so they can test them and find out exactly what the food is tainted with. It is a good idea to give 2 containers or 4 pounds of dried food to the FDA, or your local veterinarian When the FDA examined the contaminated pet food, they found that there was 30% melamine and 70% cyanuric acid. The scientists mixed these two ingredients with cat urine and found out that they quickly form crystals, which are the same crystals that have been found in the kidneys of infected cats and dogs. There are two other ingredients in the pet food recall items that might also hold some kind of health problems for your pets as well, these items are part of the melamine family and are currently under investigation - they are ammelide and ammeline. During the last recall, the veterinarians have recommended that you do not feed your pets food that have wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate. That was then, but what is it going to be next time?
Some of the symptoms to look for, which could indicate kidney failure, are loss of appetite, depression, diarrhea, urination problems, thirsty, lethargy and vomiting. If you see your pets have any of these symptoms, it is important for you to take them to the vet as soon as possible.
If your pet comes down with any of these symptoms and it has been attributed to the pet food recall, you should keep a document of the food you fed your pet or pets, the times you fed them and the date. You should also keep a document of the manufacture of the pet food, which store you bought it from and any receipts.
Your veterinarian will examine your pets and take blood samples and collect urine. This will enable them to find out if your pets are having kidney failure. The veterinarian may also take ultrasounds and extras of your pets. If it has been determined that your pets have kidney disease, the veterinarian will put your pets on an IV fluid therapy.
Recently, February 6 2008 the FDA has released a report that stated that the tainted pet food that was imported from China was also used in farm animal feed and fish feed. Until the Chinese government tightens its regulations on the manufacturers that reside within their country, and until the United States, figures out a way to sample every thing that comes into our ports (which are hundreds of thousands of items, by the way), then we are going to see more and more of this as the years role on.
